MSI 890FXA-GD70 Motherboard

With plenty of AMD 890FX based boards to chose from, it's becoming quite the task to pick the right premium 890FX board from the plethora of vendors. ASRock, ASUS, Biostar and Gigabyte all have their own variants of AMD's latest enthusiast chipset, so making a choice is a bit difficult. In addition to those choices, MSI also has their own option with the 890FXA-GD70. Heavily influenced by their 790FX based board (790FX-GD70), the 890FXA-GD70 carries over the same traditions with a 4+1 PWM design, Quad CrossFireX support, and easy overclocking options. Along with the normal enthusiast treatment, MSI also included six SATA III ports, two USB 3.0 ports, five x16 PCI-E expansion slots, a new SB850 chipset and out of the box support for AMD's latest hex core processors. There is much to like about MSI's premium 890FX offering but the question is, how does it compare? Is it worth the asking price of $189? Does it meet the price per performance medium? These are all questions any knowledgeable enthusiast would ask. Luckily for you, we have all the answers throughout this review.

Asus, Gigabyte, and MSI tackle AMD's 890FX chipset

Although $200 certainly can't be considered cheap, MSI's 890FXA-GD70 is easily the most affordable option in our trio of 890FX boards. In a sense, the GD70 is less extravagant than the Asus and Gigabyte boards. MSI hasn't piled on extras like ROG Connect or X-Fi audio software. The GD70 doesn't employ exotic chipset coolers or a larger-than-standard footprint, either. But maybe it doesn't need to. After all, the GD70 still looks the part of a high-end mobo. The black board is peppered with blue slots, ports, and heatsink accents. Only white SATA ports deviate from the black-and-blue palette, but they don't look out of place, perhaps because the socket itself already adds a splash or white to the mix. In order to accommodate seven expansion slots without deviating from standard ATX dimensions, MSI has placed the 890FX chip in an unconventional spot, between the CPU socket and the rear port cluster. The first PCIe x16 slot still sits close to the socket, but MSI has taken steps to avoid any clearance conflicts that might cause. For example, the DIMM slots only have retention tabs on one side, allowing for easy memory swapping even with a graphics card installed.
