Lenovo ThinkPad X220 review
Say hello to the Lenovo ThinkPad X220, a splendid example of the Chinese manufacturer's commitment to powerful business machines. Weighing only 1.7kg, the ThinkPad X220 can easily be carried around for a day and its briefcase-friendly 306 x 232 x 33mm dimensions make it an excellent choice for a regular traveller. The laptop itself would even be slightly smaller if it didn't have the battery protruding from the back of the chassis. But, we'll take the extra weight as the Lenovo ThinkPad X220 gave us an sizeable 308 minutes of battery life.Pay and display Part of the portability comes from the 12.1-inch display - much smaller than the conventional 15.6-inch laptop and the Lenovo is better for it. The lack of a Super-TFT reflective shine means you can use this laptop comfortably in bright-light environments such as offices and airports. The 1,366 x 768 resolution means the screen can manage 720p high-definition. Needless to say, the screen isn't really suited to watching movies. It's bright enough, but the crispness and colour isn't what you'd find on a dedicated media laptop. Neither is the space - the X220 has a 160GB SSD hard drive that, while great for portability, won't store a massive media library on the go.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X220 Tablet ($1,579 direct) strikes a nice concession between ultraportable business laptop and multitouch Windows 7 tablet. Some businesses may be hard pressed to give up its QWERTY ways for a full tablet or compromise losing time learning a new operating system. The ThinkPad X220's convertible-tablet design combines choice aspects of the Lenovo ThinkPad X220 ($1,299 direct, 4 stars) laptop with a superb multitouch screen, taking top honors among tablet PCs as our new Editors' Choice. There's little to distinguish the X220 tablet from any other black, plastic-clad member of Lenovo's ThinkPad family - aside from its twist and fold hinge that allows the lid to rotate 180 degrees and close with the screen facing outward, so you can take full advantage of the touch feature. Like the Lenovo X220 laptop, it has a magnesium alloy frame and has been ruggedized to withstand moisture, shock, vibration, and extremes in temperature. The X220 Tablet's touch screen has a treatment of scratch resistant Infinity Glass, acting as a protective layer over the actual screen, however, this extra precaution adds a glare.

Lenovo's Thinkpad X220 ultraportable, replacing the X201, is sure to be a hit with ThinkPad fans--as well as most everyone else. It's fast, light, has a great 12.5-inch display, and continues the company's tradition of superb input ergonomics with an innovative button-less touchpad and long-stroke keyboard. It also offers excellent battery life that you can stretch to a whopping 23 hours with a bottom-mounted battery slice. The downside? Not much really. The boxy, business-like appearance and somewhat cluttered keyboard deck might lack the sex appeal some users are looking for. Exact pricing for the various Thinkpad X220 configurations are unavailable at this time: the starting price should be $979, with additional costs for better CPUs, SSDs instead of standard hard drives, and more RAM. CPUs range from an Intel Core i3 to an i7, the unit accepts up to 8GB of system memory, and storage options start with a 160GB hard drive and end with a 160GB SSD. The aforementioned 12.5-inch, 1366 by 768 display is available in two flavors: one with and IPS panel for wider viewing angles, and one without. Our $1299 test unit with its 2.5GHz Core i5 2520M, 4GB of DDR3 system memory, and 7200 RPM, 320GB hard drive turned in an outstanding 122 WorldBench score.
Lenovo ThinkPad X220 Ultraportable Notebook Review
Over the past year I've had the opportunity to review nearly half a dozen Lenovo notebooks including models from the consumer-level IdeaPad line as well as the business-oriented ThinkPad series. Living up to its reputation, I've generally been pleased with Lenovo's overall build quality and performance. The recently reviewed IdeaPad U260 was a real work of art and excelled in nearly every category except for one -- it narrowly missed Intel's Sandy Bridge processor refresh which would have offered even better all-around CPU and GPU performance. Today we'll be looking at our first notebook based on Intel's second generation Core processors, the ThinkPad X220. The X220 was just introduced this month and represents Lenovo's latest ultraportable ThinkPad. Feature highlights include a 12.5" 1366x768 IPS display, a solidly built thin frame and starting weight of 3 pounds, all without sacrificing on performance courtesy of Intel's new mobile processors. The ThinkPad X series refresh is available in various configurations, from the Core i3-2310M all the way up to the high-end i7-2620M (the series fastest dual-core mobile processor).
Lenovo ThinkPad X220
Lenovo's X-series laptops have always been high-end ultraportable machines for business travelers who need to work on the go with a minimum amount of compromise. The X220 continues this tradition and adds a few new twists at the same time. The biggest design change is a move to a 12.5-inch display--a very unusual size. This allows the chassis to be a tiny bit wider, which in turn leads to a more spacious keyboard, and one that feels very different from that of just about any other laptop on the market. You also get the second generation of Intel's Core i-series processors, which in the handful of systems we've seen them in live up to the promise of more power and better battery life. To see this in such a compact system is pleasing, although Apple's 13-inch MacBook Pro also has Intel's new CPUs in an only slightly larger package. Unlike one of Lenovo's IdeaPad line of consumer laptops, the X220 is clearly a business system. The look and feel, while periodically tweaked, are classic ThinkPad, with a busy keyboard and dual touch pad-pointing stick controls. That design, coupled with the IT-friendly software found on nearly all ThinkPads, means this isn't your typical off-the-shelf laptop, and if one lands on your desk, it was probably bulk-ordered by your company's IT department.

If you've never heard of the "ThinkPad" brand name then I'm glad you finally left that cave you've been living in since the mid 1990s. ThinkPads have long been regarded as some of the best business laptops thanks to a trusted combination of cutting-edge performance, solid build quality, excellent keyboards, precision TrackPoints (that red dot in the middle of the keyboard) and fantastic warranty support. The previous generation of 12-inch Thinkpads, the ThinkPad X201, was widely regarded as the best 12-inch business notebook on the market. Can the X220 do even better? At first glance, the exterior of the ThinkPad X220 has only a few minor changes from the X201.

Lenovo's ThinkPad X200 series has a long history of combining light-weight portability, epic battery life, and uncompromising performance. The 12.5-inch, $1,299 ThinkPad X220 offers a couple of new riffs on this familiar theme, including a 16:9 screen, an Intel 2nd Generation Core processor, and a large textured clickpad, but can the new model live up to the storied legacy of its predecessors?At 12 x 9.1 x 1.25 inches and 3.6 pounds (with 9-cell battery), the ThinkPad X220 is extremely light and thin, comparing favorably to last year's ThinkPad X201 (11.6 x 9.2 x 1.4 inches, 3.8 pounds with 9-cell battery) and the HP EliteBook 2740p. However, the 13-inch MacBook Air is much lighter and thinner (12.8 x 8.9 x .68 inches, 2.9 pounds). The standard 6-cell battery takes 1 inch off the depth of the notebook and 0.2 pounds off its weight. The optional battery slice, which attaches to the bottom of the system, adds 0.6 inches of thickness and 1.5 pounds of weight.The X220 sports the tried-and-true ThinkPad aesthetic, complete with a rubberized lid and metallic Lenovo logo, and raven black sides, bottom, and deck.

A business ultraportable is only as good as its user experience, a fact that Lenovo is well aware of. The company has made tremendous strides with its X-Series laptops based on this idea, and it continues to do so with its latest Lenovo ThinkPad X220 ($1,299 direct, 4 stars). An improved keyboard, made up of larger keys, is made possible by widening what is now a 12.5-inch widescreen, yet the X220 is even lighter than its predecessor, the Lenovo ThinkPad X201 ($1,625 direct, 4 stars). Factor in the new Intel Core i5 i5-2520M CPU, basedon Intel's Sandy Bridge platform (now known as second-generation Core processors) and fantastic battery life and the ThinkPad X220 easily earns an Editor's Choice in the business ultraportable category. Lenovo is fortunate in that the bulk of its laptops are bought by IT managers who care more about the specs than the look of the laptop. The all-black frame doesn't appeal to the senses as much as the aluminum-clad HP EliteBook 2540p ($1,629 direct, 4 stars) or silvery Dell Vostro V130 ($900 direct, 3 stars). If you're looking at it from a consumer standpoint, the X220 is too uniform and lacking in color.
