How do you feel about kids with ThinkPads? That's the idea behind the ThinkPad X130e, the redesign of last year's 11-inch X130e: make a product for younger students that carries the ThinkPad branding and design. I liked last year's Lenovo ThinkPad X120e, but it was an odd duck among laptops: an 11-incher with an AMD Fusion E-Series processor, a ThinkPad Edge-like, candy-colored design, and a build that wasn't sleek enough to compete with thinner ultraportables. Like many 11-inch AMD ultraportables from last year, it was something in between a Netbook and a compact full-fledged laptop. Where do devices like these slot into a world of tablets and ultrathin laptops? The transformation of the ThinkPad X130e into a semirugged laptop for kids is an idea that has its roots in Intel initiatives from years ago. Much like many of those computers, the X130e has a tough build, rubberized bumpers, and easy-to-access ports. Otherwise, it's very similar to last year's ThinkPad X120e, sacrificing a bit of speed in exchange for an improved battery life. I'm not sure kids will want a laptop like the ThinkPad X130e, but educators might: at $549 for the AMD E-300 version, it's in the same ballpark as an iPad, and it's far more versatile for everyday use.
Tablets are ever gaining the higher ground over their netbook counterparts. But not all is lost in the netbook subcategory; companies like Lenovo and HP realize there's still a small market for portable devices with a traditional QWERTY keyboard. (Especially considering the health risks that go with typing on a tablet). For these reasons, Lenovo has released its fortified ThinkPad X130e ($495 direct), touted as a computing solution for K-12 students. Yes, its padded exterior and middle-of-the-road AMD E-300 processing performance may lend itself to a grade-school lifestyle; but its features could also be tempting to consumers outside this niche. Consider the journalism major in college who needs a device to survive the hits that come with running across campus or from interview to interview, or even the business user who needs a portable but affordable rugged computing solution. The ThinkPad X130e's plastic chassis may be seen as a throwback for consumers currently browsing for a new laptop. But the decision to use plastic over metallic alloy isn't about design per se; plastics are more affordable - a defining trait of the netbook category.
Along with reading, writing, and arithmetic, learning to use a notebook is becoming another fundamental for elementary school students. The $495 Lenovo ThinkPad X130e looks to fill the role previously filled by the likes of netbooks, but it adds durability and Lenovo's superb keyboard. Is this 11-inch AMD-powered system destined for the head of the class? Read on to find out.Although the X130e is numerically the successor to the X120e, the two differ in a number of ways. For one, the X130e, at 11.6 x 8.5 x 1.3 inches, is noticeably bulkier than its progenitor, and, at 3.4 pounds, weighs 0.4 pounds more than the X120e, as well as the HP Pavilion dm1. Where the X120e had squared edges, they're more rounded on the X130e, presumably to prevent a child from poking himself in the eye.Click to EnlargeOverall, the ThinkPad X130e strikes a good balance between Lenovo's toned-down business aesthetic and something more kid-friendly. We especially liked the red matte lid on our unit; unfortunately, it will only be available for special bids; all others will get a standard black lid.Inside, the X130e looks similar to the notebooks that came before it: A matte black bezel, keyboard and keyboard deck definitely looks like this notebook is preparing children for a life in the corporate world.
