Lenovo ThinkPad T420s review

In a nutshell, the Lenovo ThinkPad T420s is a powerful business portable that's a pleasure to use, but not exactly a looker. With its contourless, black plastic body and sharp edges, it looks like it has climbed straight out of the 90s. Open it up and things improve. The inside is still black, but there's a large keyboard, a host of function buttons which adorn the top, and a large textured track pad. The focus is on usability, so the mouse pad has two sets of buttons, two above and two below. It's also light at 1.8kg. The keyboard is extremely comfortable to use. It's easy to really get to grips with and we were firing out long documents without mistakes after a few hours. The cushioning on the keys is incredible, and it feels the closest to a proper keyboard we've seen on a laptop. The track pad feels natural to use, and we reserve special praise for Lenovo for keeping the mouse buttons basic and functional. The screen is a matte-finished 1,600 x 900 panel, which is packed into the 14-inch frame. It's a great non-reflective panel that's ideal for working outside and in direct sunshine. What's more, it's really sharp, if a little pale, so you can still enjoy a movie on long business trips, even if it's not a great media laptop for the home.

Lenovo ThinkPad T420s Review

The workhorse Lenovo ThinkPad 420s sticks with what works, offering more durability, performance and usability than comparably priced ultraportables. The ThinkPad T Series is an elder among laptops. IBM introduced the first laptop in the line, the T20, about 12 years ago. Since then the series has been consistently updated and has never once been removed from the market. Only the ThinkPad X Series has enjoyed a similar tenure. IBM’s original T20 was offered only with a 14.1-inch display, but over the years the line has expanded. High performance and 15.6-inch variants were made available. More recently, Lenovo decided to spin off a thinner, lighter version — resulting in the T420s. Though this is the thin-and-light version of the T420, don’t mistake it for an Ultrabook. The 14.1-inch display and maximum thickness of just over one inch seemed modern when the original T400s arrived in 2009, but today it’s merely average. It does allow for a standard Core i5-2520M processor, however, which means performance should be much better than what is provided by today’s thinnest laptops. Lenovo is debuting an Ultrabook version of the T-Series, called the T430u, later this year. Which raises the question: Is the T420s a good choice, or is this thin and light losing ground to more modern designs?

Lenovo's ThinkPad T420s is the business user's ultimate Goldilocks notebook. At 14.1-inches and 4 pounds, the laptop is extremely light and portable, but large enough to provide a generous high-res screen, a powerful processor, and full-sized keyboard and touchpad. However, with a price of $1,349 (as configured), the ThinkPad T420s costs more than heavier 14-inch systems such as the ThinkPad T420 or the HP EliteBook 8460p. Spoiler alert: this lightweight notebook is worth the investment.From its raven-black soft touch lid to its strong chrome hinges and elegantly simple black interior, the Lenovo ThinkPad T420s has traditional ThinkPad styling right down to the bright red track point in the middle of its keyboard. Though the system offers few new riffs on this tried-and-true theme, users will appreciate the clean bottom and sleek sides on the T420s, as well as its large, textured touchpad and dedicated volume and microphone buttons that sit above the keyboard.At 13.5 x 9.1 x 0.8-1-inches and 4 pounds, the ThinkPad T420s is significantly thinner and lighter than competitors such as the HP Elitebook 8460p (1.3 inches thick 5.4 pounds) and Dell Latitude E6420 (1.3-inch profile, 6.2 pounds with 9-cell battery).

Lenovo ThinkPad T420s User Review

If you're looking for a thin and light 14-inch business notebook, what better person to ask about it than someone who owns several? Keep reading to find out what one of our regular contributors has to say about the ThinkPad T420s. BackgroundI had planned to keep my Dell Latitude E6410 (reviewed here) for a while, partly to avoid the migration to a 16:9 display. Maybe it was the arrival of the next generation of hardware or maybe I'm getting too old to enjoy carrying the E6410 with its 9-cell battery, but I started to look around. The Dell E6420 quickly disqualified itself from consideration because it was even heavier than its predecessor. I wanted a 14-inch display with 900 vertical pixels which limited the choices. The Lenovo ThinkPad T420 claimed to be a bit lighter than the Dell, although I never trust manufacturer's weights, but the ThinkPad T420s would definitely be lighter and worthy of consideration. I then had to do my homework to figure out the potential drawbacks of the T420s, particularly in terms of the compromises caused by the lower weight and reduced thickness. I decided that it was worth the risk and when a Lenovo Easter 10% off voucher appeared I placed an order.
