The Lenovo ThinkPad E420s is the new business warrior of the 'ThinkPad' series featuring the second generation Intel Sandy Bridge Core i5 processor, 4GB RAM, an in-built Intel HD Graphics and 320 GB HDD. It also comes with useful proprietary software and a fingerprint reader. Read on to see if the new Lenovo ThinkPad E420s business laptop stacks up to its name and legacy. The Lenovo ThinkPad E420s gets the Intel's Sandy Bridge Core i5-2410M processor running at 2.3 GHz. Further, it gets a 4 GB DDR3 RAM, in-built Intel HD Graphics 3000 and a 320 GB HDD. The 14 inch screen has a native resolution of 1366x768; given that this is a 14-inch business laptop, we were disappointed that the resolution wasn't higher. As for the connectivity options the Lenovo ThinkPad E420s does very well indeed. The the left side features a slot loading DVD drive with an eject button and a card reader slot. The right side features two USB 2.0 ports out of which one is a powered USB port, a HDMI out and a headphone jack. The back includes a VGA port, an Ethernet port, an eSATA/USB 2.0 combo port and a SIM slot.
There's a time and place to act a fool, like at a Ludacris concert for example, or when entertaining your in-laws during a holiday function in which you're trying to encourage a hasty departure. Likewise, there are situations where showboating simply isn't appropriate. Wondering what this has to do with a laptop review? Well, the same concept applies to PCs. Think about it -- if your main goal is to pack as much horsepower underneath the hood as humanly possible, regardless of weight or battery life, then you're looking for a desktop replacement. And the flashier, the better, presumably because you'll be toting it around to LAN parties in between trips to the chiropractor. On the other hand, if you spend most of your time in board rooms and pitching PowerPoint presentations to co-workers and clients, a flashy system with an LED light show sends the wrong message. This is where the ThinkPad Edge 420s comes in. The E420s is a business laptop through and through, and while some of you may automatically associate that with "boring," Lenovo set out to build a machine that's subdued, but still a head turner. In place of LED lights and glitzy decals, you'll find a soft matte finish with metal accents. There's a contemporary keyboard with shapely keys, and an infinity screen intended to deliver a TV-like experience.
Lenovo uses its Edge line to cut loose, and try out new designs and features. With its latest entry in this family, the ThinkPad Edge E420s ($879 direct), the company has brought to bear some of the best weapons in its business arsenal, like a powerful Intel processor, rock-solid security, and a suite of utilities that bring out the best the laptop has to offer. Lenovo has also livened it up with an attractive design that somewhat compensates for the fact that there are more powerful systems out there than this one. The Lenovo design aesthetic has always been one of function over fashion, but the Edge E420s has a look that will catch attention while still being appropriate for the business space. Its entire exterior, from lid to underside, is done up in a dark matte finish Lenovo calls "moss black" that is soft to the touch and makes for a comfortable carrying experience. All its surfaces are highlighted by polished-metal trim along the laptop's edges (the hinges are made of metal, too), but these accents aren't purely cosmetic: They are the exposed edges of the laptop's light and strong magnesium-aluminum frame. The Edge E420s measures 1.2 by 13.7 by 9.3 inches (HWD), but it weighs only 4.3 pounds, so it's light enough to carry along on your daily commute.
The ThinkPad E420s is a consumer-oriented ThinkPad with a 1-inch thin chassis, a weight of just 4 pounds, and more than 6 hours of battery life. If that isn't enough to spark your interest, it has a starting price around $700. The E420s comes rather well-equipped for the price though coulduse a longer warranty period; business notebooks typically come with a two- or three-year standard. Of special note in the specifications list is the non-removable battery, 7mm thin Seagate hard drive (most drives are thicker at 9.5mm), light weight and slim dimensions. Build and DesignThe E420s departs from the essential ThinkPad design in a number of ways. For starters, the exterior is simpler and sleeker - there are fewer lines and less buttons.
The 14-inch member of Lenovo's small-business oriented ThinkPad Edge family of laptops, the ThinkPad Edge E420s promises a strong combination of sleek looks, portability, performance, and typing comfort. But is this 14-inch Core i5-powered notebook ($889 as configured) the best choice for mobile professionals on the move? Heck yeah. The Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E420s business laptop offers a sporty reinterpretation of the classic ThinkPad motif. While design elements like the Edge E420s's Lenovo logo, bright red TrackPoint, and dark color are all ThinkPad staples, the notebook's chrome trim, end-to-end infinity glass, and rubberized chassis breathe new life into this tried-and-true aesthetic. If you look at the deck in bright light, you'll also notice that the Edge E420s is actually a very dark green - Lenovo calls it "moss black" - rather than traditional ThinkPad black. We particularly like small touches, such as the red light that sits above the "I" in the ThinkPad logo and blinks when the system is asleep and the soft-touch bottom that has a clean look.
