Lenovo has long been associated with business, but its ThinkPad range has transcended the world of corporate business trips and offices and is now just as comfortable in the home. The ThinkPad Edge 15 doesn't disguise its corporate heritage and celebrates it through its plain black exterior and its red 'finger pointer' in the middle of the chassis. As Lenovo's budget offering, the Edge makes money-saving compromises. There's a dedicated ATI HD 4250 graphics card, which means its capable of watching HD movies and playing basic games, but that's where the positives end. In terms of storage, there's a 250GB hard drive, which in modern terms is very low. There's still plenty of room for storing thousands of pictures and plenty of movies, but most sub-£399 laptops come with at least 320GB. The Edge also ships with just 2GB of RAM which is the absolute minimum you should look for when buying a laptop. Compared to the 6GB included in the HP Pavilion dv6-3112sa, this is very low and means that using your PC won't feel as responsive when running intensive applications such as photo editing.
The Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 15 is the biggest notebook in the Edge family that also includes 13 and 14-inch models. The Edge series is known for its stylish looks that set it apart from other models in the ThinkPad series as well as its chiclet style keyboard. In this review, we see if the ThinkPad Edge 15 holds up as well in our testing as the two previous models.Readers who pay a close attention to detail will notice that the ThinkPad Edge 15 has a lot in common with both the Edge 13 and Edge 14. Some parts of this review are reused for areas with identical components. Build and DesignThe Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 15 is a lower-cost consumer and small-business oriented laptop. Unlike the SL-series ThinkPad the Edge models don't share the common look and feel of other ThinkPad models. The all-black exterior has been replaced with a silver-trimmed border with multiple glossy and matte screen cover options. Our Edge 15 review unit included the glossy Heatwave red screen cover. I think an overlooked design touch would have been changing the ThinkPad logo from silver to black on this model to better contrast against the red background.
A few months ago we took a look at Lenovo’s ThinkPad Edge 13-inch notebook and we absolutely loved it. It was a great blend of consumer and business features not to mention it looked great. The 13-inch form factor is perfect for some people, but many people want a larger laptop with more power and of course a larger screen to work with. Knowing this Lenovo has released 2 more models to its ThinkPad Edge series, a 14-inch and a 15-inch. Both models feature the new Intel Core i3 processor, DDR3 memory, HD graphics and of course all of the extra features you would expect from a ThinkPad. Today we will be taking a look at the 15-inch model. We received the ThinkPad Edge directly from Lenovo so it came nicely packed in a large box. On the side of the box you have all of your serial numbers. Opening the box up everything inside is nicely protected. Getting it all out your have of course the ThinkPad Edge notebook, 6 cell battery, power adapter, and a troubleshooting guide. The first thing you notice is that the ThinkPad Edge is red! This is the first time Lenovo has gone with another color other than black on their ThinkPad’s.
If you're not an overly demanding business user, simplicity definitely has its advantages. For instance, a moderately equipped laptop, like the Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 15, runs for as little as $650 (direct). Its boxy black frame may not strike a chord with anyone who puts a premium on aesthetics, but productivity makes up for this shortcoming. The Edge 15 has an excellent business user experience despite parts that aren't the top of the line. The Edge 15 is on the cusp of being too conservative, as its thick, boxy-looking black chassis lacks any kind of appeal. The HP ProBook 5310m ($899.00 Direct, ) and the Dell Vostro V13 (stay tuned for my review), on the other hand, have sleeker aluminum finishes and thinner form factors, so their design is far more attractive. On the bright side, the Edge 15 is customizable with a Heat Wave Red or a glossy black finish. The black matted finish on my review unit repels finger prints and smudges nicely. At 5.5 pounds, this laptop is meant to be a fixture on an office desk, even though a large bag can make a nice travelling companion out of it. But the HP ProBook 5310m (3.8lb) and the Dell V13 make for more travel-friendly companions.
