You could be forgiven for thinking that all-in-one PCs are as consumer-oriented as Nordstrom’s. After all, their greatest benefits — style, size, and ease of use — are those that appeal to the mainstream buyer.Lenovo, however, sees a place for all-in-ones at the office, too, and has a corresponding line of ThinkCentre models, including the 23-inch M90z. The company promotes a touchscreen all-in-one as a perfect solution for a business or home office, to “tame office clutter.”The spectre of “workplace clutter” has been brought up before, usually by people arguing in favor of increased virtualization or the use of nettops as office computers. In some situations, they’re right — a busy desk can feel more spacious if less room must be devoted to electronics, and computers with cutting-edge hardware are sometimes a necessary expense. This, however, has less impact on a consumer looking for an all-in-one for his or her office. In this setting, the M90z has to rely more on its design and performance — which could be a problem, because our review unit came with a first-generation Core i5 rather than a newer second-gen model. Does it have the chops to hang with competition from HP, Sony and even Lenovo’s own IdeaCentre line?
Seasoned road warriors are likely familiar with Lenovo's ThinkPad laptops, which offer business-oriented software and functionality tailored to keeping each laptop running smoothly. The 23-inch Lenovo ThinkCentre M90z ($1400, as configured, as of September 23, 2010) promises to offer that familiar ThinkPad touch in a large, speedy package. Much like the company's business laptops, the ThinkCentre M90z is an unassuming black box. But it's attractive in its simplicity, with the spacious display sitting on metal brackets that lend it a chic, industrial vibe. It's powered by a 3.2GHz Core i5-650 processor, and offers 4GB of DDR3 RAM and a 500GB hard drive. On PCWorld's WorldBench 6 test suite, the M90z netted a score of 117; you won't find many big-screen all-in-ones with more muscle, unless you're willing to shell out quite a bit more cash for the Apple Core i7 iMac. The M90z's 23-inch screen supports Windows 7's multitouch gestures, if you'd like to add a bit of poking and prodding to your workflow. Lenovo also tossed in a bit of its own finger-friendly magic, in the form of SimpleTap. A two-fingered double tap on the display fires up the SimpleTap overlay, which presents a grid of large tiles.
Lenovo might be best known for their ThinkPad notebooks and ominous black ThinkStation desktops, but the company continues to push ahead with its range of all-in-ones. The new Lenovo ThinkCentre M90z is aimed at both consumer and business users, and while the range kicks off at $929 with a mere Pentium CPU, the model on the SlashGear test bench today is the multitouch-capable touchscreen version complete with a 3.2GHz Intel Core i5 processor. Check out how it performs after the cut. As well as the Core i5-650 (with 4MB L3 cache) there's 4GB of DDR3 memory (1GB of which is allocated to the Intel GMA HD graphics) and a 320GB 7,200rpm hard-drive (500GB is an option). Lenovo also fit a DVD burner and WiFi b/g/n, while a memory card reader and Bluetooth are optional. Above the 23-inch 1920 x 1080 display is a 2-megapixel webcam that can be physically covered up with a sliding hatch, useful for the particularly paranoid. Underneath the screen are the stereo speakers; there's also a microphone hidden in the bezel. Connectivity, meanwhile, includes two USB 2.0 ports, audio in/out and - if specified - the card reader on the right hand edge, while there are a further four USB 2.0 ports, gigabit ethernet, a DisplayPort output and a VGA input on the back.
Lenovo has been making a push in touch-enabled products as of late. A few months back, we actually tested one of the company's first touchscreen-enabled ThinkPad notebooks (and an IdeaPad, for that matter). Regardless, the company isn't exactly a household name when it comes to touch-enabled products but with Windows 7's limited built in touch capabilities, the cost of entry is lower perhaps, save for the cost of a touch-capable panel. The ThinkCentre M90z is Lenovo's newest 23" touch-enabled all-in-one PC, and it's going up against some stiff competition. HP's TouchSmart, Apple's iMac line, as well as a number of MSI units offer similar features at a similar price, and some might say with more modern looking, stylish enclosures. So, what does the M90z have to set it apart? That's exactly what we aim to find out in our analysis. Built for business, but perfectly fine for at-home use, the ThinkCentre M90z offers a 23" touch screen (glossy) with a Full HD 1080p resolution. Windows 7 is the operating system of choice, and the options from there are fairly varied.
