Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 Review

The ultrabook doesn't want to remain an ultrabook anymore, apparently. Not be confused with the hybrid devices that seem to be popping up here and there, but we are talking about full-fledged ultrabooks that are trying to offer a lot more than they currently do. The Dell XPS 12 was the first ultrabook that we reviewed with this in mind, and it did sort of make sense. But only just. The Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 comes along, and takes that a little bit further. Does it work? Again, sort of. Lenovo has named this the Yoga for a reason – it can handle various positions that most ultrabooks cannot even dream of. And yes, the display does not come off like on some devices. Essentially, what you have is a traditional ultrabook as you fish it out of the packaging. The review unit that we received from Lenovo had the orange colour, but there will be multiple colours available. The IdeaPad Yoga 1's lid has the typical traditional Lenovo clean look, with the branding on one side. The soft feel on the lid is something rarely seen on ultrabooks, because it is considered fashionable (right or wrong, that is open for debate) to have metal shining to show off the quality. The slimness of the Yoga 13 is again something we must appreciate - 16.9mm to be precise.

Lenovo Yoga 13 Review

The IdeaPad Yoga 13 was one of the first hybrid Windows 8 systems that consumers got a look at. Lenovo unveiled a near-finished prototype at CES nearly a year ago - well before Windows 8 was finished and ready for prime time. Since that time we've learned a great deal about Lenovo's flagship touchscreen convertible but perhaps the biggest question was whether or not a convertible notebook/tablet makes sense at a time when dedicated tablets are arguably the hottest trend in consumer electronics. Despite multiple attempts from manufacturers over the past several years, hybrids never gained much traction, not necessarily because of hardware issues but simply because the software to support such an environment hasn't existed until just recently. Previous iterations of Windows did support touch in a limited capacity but the UI was never built with touch in mind. Evidently that has all changed with Windows 8 which adds a touch friendly environment front and center (but not everywhere) and Lenovo looks to capitalize early and often with the do-it-all Yoga 13. Priced from $999, this system was one of the first portable systems to launch alongside Windows 8.

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 Ultrabook Review

Lenovo's IdeaPad Yoga 13 ultrabook is designed to give users flexibility in a way other ultrabooks don't: This ultrabook features a unique hinge that lets the Yoga 13's touchscreen display fold 360 degrees, converting the ultrabook from notebook mode to tablet mode. Thanks to its dual-hinge design, the Yoga 13 can also be used in "stand" or "tent" modes as well. The IdeaPad Yoga 13 runs on Windows 8. When used in notebook mode, the Yoga 13 gives you the full desktop side of Windows 8 with the added benefit of a touchscreen. In tablet, tent, or stand modes, you'll appreciate all of the touch-friendly controls and features found within Windows 8. But before we dig in much further than that, here's a quick walk-around and demo of the device to give you a feel of these key features... As you may guess from its name, the Yoga 13 features a 13-inch screen that supports 10-point multitouch. This screen uses direct-bonding technology to make the touchscreen even more responsive and reduce the loss of light in comparison to other screens that use air-bonding technology.

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 review

With the advent of Windows 8 and its touch-optimised interface, laptop manufacturers have had to quickly rethink how a machine allows you to interact with it. Various hybrids have sprung up, splicing the touchscreen interaction of a tablet with the physical keyboard and processing power of a normal laptop.Lenovo's turned to bendy gym bunnies for inspiration with the IdeaPad Yoga 13. It looks like a standard laptop, but the 13-inch screen folds back on itself, allowing you to use it as a tablet. My review model came with an Intel Core i5 processor and 4GB of RAM. It's on sale now from PC World for £1,000. Annoyingly, the model on sale packs a higher-end Core i7 processor. You can expect a slightly improved performance to my review model, but I doubt the difference would be immense. At £1,000 the Yoga 13 isn't cheap -- it's the same price as Dell's new XPS 12, with its fancy rotating screen. Sadly though, it doesn't do much to demand your money over Dell's offering. While its flipping mechanic is simpler, it requires more space, making Lenovo's machine a more awkward travel companion. The Yoga also has a slightly bigger screen, but with a lower resolution. It's bright and bold, but so is Dell's.

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 review: Flexible in more than one way

Lenovo's Yoga is aptly named – it's flexible in more than one way. Not only can this Ultrabook be used as a laptop and a tablet, its screen can actually swivel around the hinge 360 degrees to maximize the tablet experience. Sure, at 0.67 inches thick and 3.4 pounds with a 13-inch screen, the Yoga isn't the most comfortable, portable tablet on the market. But it's a pretty cool device when you consider that, oh yeah, it's both a laptop and a tablet. Our review model, which costs $1099 as configured, has a third-generation Intel Core i5-3317U processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 128GB solid state drive. The Yoga has a 13-inch multi-touch touchscreen, a 720p webcam, and built-in Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, and runs Windows 8. Performance In our new WorldBench 8 benchmark tests, the Yoga scores 60 out of 100. This means that the Yoga is 40 percent slower than our baseline testing model, which has a third-generation Intel Core i5 desktop processor, 8GB of RAM, and an Nvidia discrete graphics card. The Yoga's score of 60 isn't great for a desktop, but the Yoga isn't a desktop – it's an Ultrabook.

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13

The Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 is almost everything we want in a hybrid ultrabook. As an ultrabook, the Yoga 13 offers an uncompromised computing experience, while wedding Windows 8 with the touch screen it deserves, and delivering performance that will keep you satisfied at work and play. As a dual function device, it transitions elegantly and intuitively, standing out from the rest with the best hinge mechanism we've seen on a hybrid. But as a tablet, it falters. It's too big, and for a device that offers convenience and mobility, that's a significant drawback. That said, the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 is an excellent ultrabook, a great touch-enabled Windows 8 PC, and a passable tablet, and it's the most affordable hybrid ultrabook we've reviewed, to date. Thanks to Lenovo's "multi-mode" hinge, the Yoga 13 opens like a regular clamshell laptop, but can then open further, folding back around to close behind the screen for a mobile tablet that can be used on the go. The 13-inch capacitive touch display offers 10-finger tracking and HD resolution (1,600 by 900). The smaller hybrids we've reviewed offer 1,920-by-1,080 resolution, but the Yoga 13's display still looks good.

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 review

In this first run of Windows 8 devices, manufacturers are essentially throwing things against the wall to see what sticks. We've seen every size, every form factor, every direction and angle of rotation — companies are trying desperately to figure out the best way to take advantage of everything Windows 8 can do. Even Lenovo's lineup is all over the place. There's the Lynx convertible, which transforms from laptop to tablet. The Twist rotates and folds, and looks like the X Series tablets we've seen for years. And then there's the IdeaPad Yoga, perhaps the most enticing of the bunch — we've been waiting for this device to come out ever since it was announced at CES back in January. The Yoga's crazy gimmick is its hinge, which allows the screen to fold all the way back over the keyboard, so you can hold your laptop like a tablet. Carnival sideshow tricks aside, though, the IdeaPad is still a pretty appealing Windows 8 laptop. My review unit has a 1.7GHz Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 128GB SSD in an attractive 3.5-pound package. It's more laptop than tablet, but it's trying to be both — and much more.

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga Review

Lenovo's latest Ultrabook will literally bend over backward for you. The Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga ($999; $1,099 as configured) switches from a laptop to a tablet, and a variety of other poses, with a quick fold of the lid. Add in a comfortable keyboard and a sharp 1600 x 900-pixel display and you've got a lightweight convertible that can go from business to party in less than a second. Find out if this bendable laptop is a godsend or gimmick for multitasking road warriors.Click to EnlargeGentle, rounded curves and alluring surfaces? Sign us up. The Yoga's chassis is swathed in a voluptuous, gray, soft-touch finish whose hue doesn't stand out, but whose surface certainly feels great to the touch. Lenovo eschews ostentation, choosing a chrome Lenovo logo in the top right corner as its sole adornment. The pair of matte-silver, chrome hinges is both sturdy and elegant. The notebook's interior sports more of the same soft-touch finish, but this time it's done in black and has a textured-leather motif. The keyboard sits in a recessed well, and a small IdeaPad insignia is etched into the lower right corner. The power button, normally above the keyboard, sits on the left front lip, along with the OneKey Recovery button and battery status light.

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 Review

With so many Windows 8 PCs launching in the next couple months, manufacturers are going to have find something to make their machines stand out. Lenovo has taken this idea to extremes with one of its new computers, the IdeaPad Yoga 13. Convertibles are nothing new – we've seen plenty of laptops that can “turn into” tablets – but the IdeaPad Yoga 13 features a 360 degree hinge that makes it so much more than just a tablet/laptop convertible. I'll say this right off the bat: the IdeaPad Yoga 13 is one of the coolest machines I've ever seen. But being cool is only one part of the equation, and that 360-degree hinge can't carry the whole machine if the rest of it is nothing to write home about. Has Lenovo delivered an interesting and unique machine that won't disappoint when it comes to actual usability, or is the Yoga 13 a dud that will be lost in a sea of Windows 8 machines despite the fact that it has some intriguing features? Read on to find out. Design If we were basing this on looks alone, the Yoga 13 wouldn't do very well. That's not because the Yoga 13 is a bad looking computer, it's just that the silver ultrabook look is getting a little old these days.

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 Review

Lenovo's Yoga offers a different take on the convertible laptop/tablet thanks to the innovative 360-degree hinge design. It's an excellent Ultrabook for the price without the bells and whistles; and with them, you have a near perfect Windows 8 machine. When Lenovo first introduced the IdeaPad Yoga 13 at CES last January, the innovative hinge design made this Ultrabook the belle of the ball. Designed for Windows 8, this device literally bent over backwards to accommodate all of the operating system's features. Nearly 10 months later, the Yoga is still one of the most coveted Windows 8 devices. Other companies have given us their own take on the hybrid laptop/tablet, including the ASUS Vivo Tab RT, and the Microsoft Surface (to some extent). While those prioritize the tablet aspect, the Yoga is a laptop-first kind of machine. Starting at $999, the Yoga is right in line with other Ultrabooks and even offers more than most of its competitors at this price point. But are the Yoga's extra features just window dressing, or is it truly a marvel of innovation? At first glance, the Yoga looks like any other IdeaPad that's come out in the past few years. Like the IdeaPad U Series, it has the same flat edges, slightly rounded corners, island-style keyboard, and large clickpad.

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga review

Yoga by name and by nature, the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga is a revolutionary touchscreen Windows 8 laptop that doubles as a 13-inch tablet, offering users the choice of the two styles of use. The Yoga moniker comes from the lid's ability to bend backwards on itself, so that the traditional laptop design transforms to become a tablet, which makes it better suited to watching videos or using apps, while losing none of the standard laptop usability. Under the hood is a generous configuration that offers plenty of power. There's a low-voltage third generation Intel Core i7 processor clocked at 1.8GHz with 4GB of RAM, which will crunch through nearly any task. High-end HD video rendering is best suited to beefier machines, rather than a laptop that's designed for portability, but playback, picture editing and casual gaming is all well within its limitations. The Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga comes in two colours - an attractive orange or a muted and slightly corporate-looking grey. We much prefer the former, which will turn heads for its stylish design as well as its contortionist tendencies. The inside, however, is plain black, with a spacious keyboard, but it sorely misses backlighting for use in dim conditions.
