Lenovo IdeaPad V460 Review

Business notebooks aren't always affordable -- Lenovo aims to change that with its V-series IdeaPad. Today we look at the V460, which has a 14-inch display, Intel Core i5 processor and comes in under $800.Our Lenovo IdeaPad V460 has the following specifications: The specifications are slightly less than expected for this price range, however this review will show whether the promised "good build" quality makes up for the gap. Build and DesignThe IdeaPad V460 has a stylish professional look which is at home in nearly any environment. The chassis and lid are covered in finely brushed aluminum, which not only feels great, but adds strength. The V460 weighs in at 4.85 lbs, which is slightly more than usual for a 14-inch notebook. The chassis is relatively thin with an average height of about one inch. The V460's build quality is above average for its price range. Grabbing the two front corners of the chassis and twisting produces minimal flex. The chassis surface is rigid and does not bend under pressure thanks to the aluminum.

We review Lenovo's IdeaPad V460 thin-and-light laptop, which offers powerful processors and a great look, but lacks in battery life. Maybe you can have it all. Despite a notebook market fragmented into various extremes - from netbooks that can barely play YouTube videos to desktop replacements you can barely lift off the desk - a handful of notebooks still manage to find some middle ground. Lenovo’s attempt to balance size, power, and price manifests as the IdeaPad V460, an aluminum-clad, 14-inch notebook with both integrated and discrete graphics for power when you need it and battery life when you don’t.Lenovo’s V460 follows the now-familiar pattern for mobility notebooks with some bite: It idles on Intel’s GMA graphics chipset for puttering around the desktop, then fires up the GeForce 310M waiting in the wings when it’s time to crunch some numbers. Our review unit got an extra dose of pep in the form of an Intel Core i5 processor running at 2.27GHz, rather than the Core i3 on the base configuration. Every version available through Lenovo offers GeForce 310M graphics with 512MB of dedicated RAM, a 500GB hard drive, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, and a built-in DVD-RW drive.

Lenovo’s ThinkPad line is famous for its award-winning business notebooks. But what if you consider the ThinkPad design—even the relatively flashy new ThinkPad Edge—to be too tame? Lenovo has you covered with its small business–oriented IdeaPad V460, which features a speedy Core i5 CPU and switchable graphics, all encased in an attractive brushed metal chassis. This laptop offers strong performance in a sleek, lightweight package. However, drawbacks such as short battery life and narrow viewing angles hold the notebook back.At 13.3 x 9.2 x 1 inches and only 4.8 pounds, the IdeaPad V460 is relatively light for a 14-inch system, comparing favorably to the 5-pound, 13.5 x 9.2 x 1.3-inch ThinkPad Edge 14. Instead of the plastic found on the ThinkPad Edge, the IdeaPad V460 goes all out with a classy brushed gunmetal gray lid and deck. Sleek tapered edges and an angular hinge design reminiscent of the IdeaPad Y510 complete the high-tech look. The classic keyboard, however, looks a bit out of place. Though it looks like a consumer system, the V460 has a few business-friendly security features up its sleeve. Unlike the small business–oriented ThinkPad Edge family, the V460 has a fingerprint reader for biometric authorization.
