Laptop Reviews: Compare PC and Mac Laptops and Netbooks

With the U260, Lenovo has slipped into the gap between 13.3-inch ultras and 11.6-inch laptops. With its 12.6-inch matte panel (1366 x 768 points), weighing 1.38 Kg on the scales and thickness of 1.8 cm, it should be perfect for carrying around on your back. Ultra slim and with an aluminium and magnesium alloy shell, the U260 is clearly a handsome product. Its shell is covered with a soft rubber layer. Having tested it, we can tell you that it resists scratches and other marks well. The finish is excellent, then. Well done to Lenovo. In spite of being slightly rat-a-tat, the chiclet keyboard is still nice to use. The keys are well proportioned and well positioned. Keying is supple, agreeable and quiet. The multitouch touchpad is precise. The glide is nice and soft to the touch. The only thing we might fault it for are the buttons, which are a little too soft for our taste. The webcam is mediocre. Light tones are burnt and the dark blocked and pixelised. So it's really only viable as a fallback solutions. Connectivity is on the light side. On the left you get a USB 2.0 port and a headphones/mic mini-jack combo. On the right there's a second USB 2.0 port, two video outs (VGA and HDMI), the power in and an RJ45 (Ethernet) port.

Lenovo IdeaPad U260 User Review

Lenovo's IdeaPad family of notebooks is the company's multimedia/entertainment series, as opposed to the business-optimized ThinkPad line or the budget-oriented Essential line. The editors at NotebookReview.com didn't have an overwhelmingly positive opinion about the 12.5-inch Lenovo IdeaPad U260, but contributor Daniel P. Dern wanted to chime in with his own take on the ultraportable U260.BUY the IdeaPad U260 Laptop Computer - 087632U - Intel Core i3-380UMLENOVO $749.00see all pricing for the IdeaPad U260 Laptop Computer - 087632U - Intel Core i3-380UMThe IdeaPad U260 is Lenovo's (and, according to the company, the industry's) first 12.5-inch (widescreen display) laptop. The U260 has no internal hardware configuration options to alter the base MSRP of $1,199.00, not even a solid-state disk (SSD) instead of the hard drive. You can, of course, add service or warranty options, along with third-party software and peripherals, which will bring the system price up. (I assume it's possible to upgrade after-the-fact to Windows 7 Professional.) Remember, the base warranty is for just one year. Upgrades start at $39, up to $229 for the 3-year In-Home Warranty + 3-year LenovoCare Notebook Protection.

Lenovo IdeaPad U260

The Lenovo IdeaPad U260 is an interesting thin and light laptop from the Chinese PC manufacturer. The IdeaPad U260 is sleek, stylish, has a 12-inch form factor and comes with an Intel Core i3-380UM ultra-low voltage processor to balance battery life and everyday performance. The laptop doesn't skimp on useful proprietary Lenovo software and is aimed towards mobile professionals and students. Let's see what the Lenovo IdeaPad U260 has to offer. For a company that's renowned around the world for its rugged business laptop line -- ThinkPad -- Lenovo has tried its hand at crafting a thin, stylish-looking laptop with the IdeaPad U260. The thin and light U260 definitely has elegance and flair in plenty, its screen lid is covered in smooth aluminum coloured in coffee brown, giving the IdeaPad U260 a snazzy look -- the same surface extends on to the laptop's bottom panel. Prop the laptop open to reveal an all-black keyboard, touchpad and palmrest -- the palmrest is covered in faux leather, which is soft to touch and gives the U260 a premium feel. Where the Dell Vostro V130 -- a similar thin and light laptop -- has an all-metal exterior, the Lenovo IdeaPad U260 differs to include a slightly more trendy look and feel, even giving the stylish Sony VAIO S a run for its money.

Lenovo IdeaPad U260: A Stylish Ultralight Notebook

If you are in the market for an ultralight notebook with a gorgeous LED backlit LCD and don't want to spend more than $1,000, the Lenovo IdeaPad U260 should be on your short list. The U260's claim to fame is its 12.5-inch form-factor, making it larger than your average netbook--but at a mere 18mm thick and 3 lbs, it's almost as light as one. Lenovo claims the U260 is the first 12.5-inch ultralight machine on the market, and pricing starts at $899. What you'll notice first about the notebook is that is just plain good looking. We found people staring at the Mocha brown unit we tested, and we received a compliment or two on how nice it looked. It also comes in a color Lenovo calls clementine orange, both made from a tough-but-light one-piece magnesium aluminum cover. Many Windows 7 notebook users aren't used to such attention. That kind of thing is usually reserved for the latest Macbook Air, the newest tablet, or the fanciest Lenovo touchscreen convertible. But Lenovo has been really trying to break out of the notebook design doldrums that came from its IBM ThinkPad roots. We'd say the U260 does just that.

Lenovo IdeaPad U260 12.5-inch Laptop Review

It is not often that I look at a laptop and say wow that looks beautiful and then pick it up and fall in love with it even more. I think the only time that has really happened was with a Macbook Air, but I’m not even a Mac user. Lenovo is not a company you really think of when it comes to beautifully designed laptops, they make great laptops no doubt, but most of them are not that eye catching. Today we are going to be taking a look at the Lenovo IdeaPad U260 12.5-inch laptop, which is one of sleekest laptops I’ve ever seen and comes packed with an Intel Core i5 processor and 4GB of memory. Is the U260 all looks or will it really perform? Special thanks to Lenovo for providing us with the IdeaPad U260 12.5-inch Laptop to review. The U260 comes in a brown box with a U260 logo on it and a carrying handle. Opening the box up there are 2 boxes inside that are nicely packaged. Inside the smaller box is the power adapter and in the larger box is the U260 laptop. Also inside you will find the users guide. I was instantly surprised when I took the U260 out of the packaging because of the mocha brown color.

Lenovo IdeaPad U260

The Lenovo IdeaPad U260 joins a select group of laptops that prioritize thinness over everything else, a list that includes the Dell Vostro V130 ($928 direct, 3 stars), the Apple MacBook Air 13-inch ($1,299 direct, 4 stars), and the Samsung 9-Series. And consequently, they all have something in common: The amenities that end up on the chopping block, because they're thin, are the same ones seasoned users can't do without. In the U260's case, they're the performance oomph and an SD card slot that you could otherwise get with, say, the Toshiba Portege R705-P35. There's something to be said about unboxing a well-packaged laptop. The slim, hardened case that contains the U260 takes cues from Apple's own minimalistic packaging techniques and is almost a sin to throw away. The frame of the laptop is made out of plastic, which isn't as elegant as the metal-clad MacBook Air and Dell V130, but the U260's use of textures and earthy colors - Clementine Orange and Mocha Brown - are well-thought out. The palm rest area, for instance, has the texture of leather.

Lenovo IdeaPad U260 Review

The Lenovo IdeaPad U260 is the first ultraportable laptop to feature a 12.5-inch display and is packed with an Intel Core i5 processor. A durable metal body and leather accents add to the premium feel, but is this notebook worth the $1,000 price tag? Keep reading to find out.BUY the IdeaPad U260 Laptop Computer - 087632U - Intel Core i3-380UMLENOVO $899.00see all pricing for the IdeaPad U260 Laptop Computer - 087632U - Intel Core i3-380UMSpecifications for our review unit of the Lenovo IdeaPad U260 are as follows: Build and DesignThe team at Lenovo is better known for the all-business ThinkPad line of professional notebooks than for designing attractive laptops for consumers. That said, the U260 might just be the best looking Lenovo notebook we've ever seen. Let's get right down to it and say what many people are thinking; the Lenovo IdeaPad U260 is about as close as anyone can get to building a MacBook in PC clothing. The U260 isn't a carbon copy of the MacBook, but Lenovo engineers took some of the key design elements that make the MacBook attractive -- a Chiclet-style keyboard, a clean-looking design, a thin and light metal chassis -- and put them into a Windows-based laptop.

Lenovo IdeaPad U260 12.5" Laptop Review

Mobile computing has undoubtedly been one of the most dynamic segments of consumer electronics in recent history. The netbook craze from a few years ago is starting to dwindle down. Meanwhile, smartphones have evolved into mini personal computers in their own right. Jump-started by Apple last year, 2011 looks to be the year of the tablet computer, ushering in yet a new implementation of computing on-the-go. While all of these extensions of mobile computing are exciting, the trusty laptop is still the most well-rounded option. Classified as a Lifestyle product, Lenovo's IdeaPad U260 aims to be your "thin, light, stylish travel companion". Lenovo added the ultraportable U260 to their IdeaPad line-up late last year at an introductory price of $899. Our price-as-tested today is $999 which includes an upgraded processor and a custom Clementine Orange paint scheme. Our IdeaPad U260 came equipped with Intel's ULV Core i5-470UM operating at 1.33 GHz with 3MB of L2 cache, Intel HD Graphics, 4GB of PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM, a Hitachi 320GB 5400 RPM hard drive, integrated Intel Wireless Wi-Fi Link 1000, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, a 4-cell Li-Polymer battery and a 12.5" HD AntiGlare 1366 x 768 display.

Lenovo IdeaPad U260

Despite a pedigree of ominous-looking, utilitarian forerunners and a name that conjures up memories of a bad Matthew McConaughey WWII submarine movie, Lenovo's IdeaPad U260 takes the company's laptops somewhere they've never been before--the queue for this year's style and design awards. The U260 is not only stylish for Lenovo, it gives Apple and Sony something to think about. When closed, with its dark copper shell (Lenovo calls it "mocha brown") protruding ever so slightly beyond the black main-body, turning this only 3/4-inch thick laptop end-on will remind you of nothing so much as an extravagantly bound book or pad-holder. It's even packed classily; the unit arrived in a black-monolithic inner container of the absolute highest quality. Whether Lenovo is being deliberately ironic is anyone's guess. Open up the IdeaPad U260 and you encounter an all-black, minimally-populated keyboard deck. Said populous consists of the smallish power button, an ambient light sensor that adjusts display brightness automatically, a teeny OneKey system recovery button (only accessible with a pointy object), the best Chiclet-style keyboard you'll ever type on, and an equally elegant touchpad with wonderfully smoothly operating buttons.

Lenovo IdeaPad U260

Can the company that's synonymous with business notebooks create a machine that excites consumers? Yup, and the IdeaPad U260 is exhibit A. With its magnesium alloy chassis, orange lid and bottom, and soft leather palm rest, the world's first 12.5-inch ultraportable combines executive sleek with casual cool. Meanwhile, a low-voltage Intel Core i5 CPUs provides plenty of pep for $899. Just don't forget to pack the AC adapter along with this 3-pound head-turner.The IdeaPad U260 has the kind of flair we wish ThinkPads had. The lid comes in Clementine orange (our version) or Mocha brown, and the design is made from a single piece of magnesium-aluminum alloy that lends the notebook a sense of smooth, minimal professionalism. Measuring just 0.7-inches thin and weighing one-tenth of a pound more than the most recent 2.9-pound Apple MacBook Air, the U260 slips so nicely into bags and backpacks, it's easy to forget the machine is there. When the notebook is open, your eyes are quickly drawn to the LED status icons that are traced in illuminating dots, and your hands are drawn to the soft, leather-textured palm rest. The U260's left, right, and front sides, as well as the bezel around the display, are lined in a smart-looking, polished black plastic.Lenovo didn't skimp when it came to the notebook's base, either.
