Lenovo IdeaPad S205 review

The Lenovo IdeaPad S205 is a small and light laptop, but in order to keep this machine highly portable, some compromises have been made.At just 1.4kg and with a dinky 11.6-inch screen, the IdeaPad S205 looks more like a netbook than a laptop. It's designed to be as portable as possible, and you barely even notice it when the compact body is stashed in your bag. Thankfully, it's solidly constructed, with only a slight hint of flex. We certainly weren't worried about it breaking when we threw it into our backpack and wandered around town. The plain black design of the interior is nothing special, although we liked the unusual and subtle boxy pattern on the lid. Despite the reduced size, the IdeaPad is still surprisingly chunky. This is due to the battery, which protrudes from the rear of the machine and pushes it upwards. As a result, this laptop is almost as thick as the 17.3-inch Toshiba Satellite C670D. However, that raised rump means the keyboard is tilted at a more comfortable angle for typing. Lenovo has managed to fit an isolation-style keyboard on to the compact body, which is perfect for touch-typing thanks to the gaps between the keys.

Lenovo Ideapad S205

Netbooks were the hottest tickets in town back when no one fathomed that a tablet could ever replace them as Web-surfing computers. They've lost much of their original momentum, but plenty of good netbooks are still being made. For instance, the Lenovo IdeaPad S205 ($579.99 direct) is an 11-inch model powered by an AMD E-350 processor instead of an Intel Atom and 4GB of memory rather than the typical 1GB. Add in a solid feature set, and the S205 has enough oomph to serve as your primary laptop. But you can get a better deal by selecting its entry-level configuration or choosing the HP Pavilion dm1z ($449 direct, 4 stars). All-plastic construction is a familiar design tune for netbooks, but their additional decoration can make or break them. The IdeaPad S205 has a chocolate hue with a subtle block pattern underneath it. It doesn't hide fingerprints and smudges as effectively as the Sony VAIO VPC-YB15KX/S ($599.99 list, 4 stars) and Lenovo ThinkPad X120e ($579.99 direct, 4 stars), whose anti-reflective tops are made for that purpose. The S205 is also boxy-looking, lacking the tapered look of the dm1z or the curves of the Samsung NF310-A01 ($399.99 list, 4 stars).

Lenovo IdeaPad S205 Review

Riding the wave of affordable AMD-powered ultraportables, the IdeaPad S205 aims to charm shoppers by pairing a stylish design with a lot more muscle than a netbook. For $579, this 11.6-inch notebook also offers a spacious keyboard,The S205 gives off a subtle but sophisticated vibe. We like that the glossy plastic lid has a subtle artistic pattern to it (dubbed a "cityscape finish") and that the brown dominates the entire notebook. The deck has a striated pattern, which makes a cool record-scratch sound when you rub your fingernails over it. This not only keeps fingerprints away, but also feels good to touch.Weighing just 3.3 pounds, the S205 is the kind of notebook you can carry around all day without feeling weighed down. It measures 11.4 x 7.6 x 1.0 inches, so it'll slip into a small bag or briefcase and still leave room for your smartphone or tablet.Thanks to the low-power APU inside, the IdeaPad S205 stays relatively cool. After we played a Hulu video at full screen for 15 minutes, the hottest area was the underside, where we measured 91 degrees Fahrenheit at the center. This reading is still below the 95-degree threshold of what we consider uncomfortable. Even the area near the vent didn't get hot enough to notice while we used it.
