Lenovo IdeaPad S12 with Ion

We recently celebrated the second anniversary of the netbook, and in that relatively short period of time, the systems in this class have grown from cramped 7-inch machines with short battery life to 12-inch laptops that blur the lines between mini-notebooks and full size portables. Now the Lenovo IdeaPad S12, the second Nvidia Ion-powered netbook to hit the U.S. market, is continuing that evolution. Priced at $649, the S12 is more expensive than many other systems in the category, but with the premium you get ample graphics capable of playing HD video and mid-range games, 3GB of RAM, good ergonomics, an instant-on OS, and surprisingly loud speakers. We just wish that this version of the S12 was cheaper and could crank out longer battery life. The S12 with Ion looks identical to the previously released S12. Featuring an 11.5 x 9.1 footprint that tapers from 0.9 to 1.4 inches with its six-cell battery (which juts out slightly from the back) and weighing 3.4 pounds, the S12 is easy to carry. We’re fans of the subtle dot pattern that graces the glossy black lid, but it picks up fingerprints quickly. The inside of the S12 has a matte black surface and a series of buttons above the keyboard, including one for system recovery, volume controls, and a button to launch Quick Start, Lenovo’s instant-on operating system. Overall, the HP Mini 311 is lighter (3.2 pounds) and sleeker, but the S12 has better ergonomics.

Lenovo Ideapad S12

Larger than your average netbook, the S12 provides average performance at a fairly high netbook price. We're waiting for the Ion-based version. The Lenovo S12 is a portable, affordable, and multimedia-minded netbook with a full-size keyboard and decent battery life. Its 12.1-inch screen makes the S12 big enough for those who lament the tininess of a 9- or 10-inch screen, yet it still retains its netbook status. What should be the shining gem in the Lenovo S12's crown is an embedded nVidia Ion chipset--a netbook wunderkind that will be able to run 1080p video and games (see more about that here) with relative ease compared with just about every other netbook. Unfortunately, this is not that netbook. Lenovo sent us a $499 teaser that packs only an integrated GMA 950. Considering that the S12 comes from the same factory where chunky, no-nonsense ThinkPads are regularly produced, its design is surprisingly sleek and sexy. It comes in either shiny black or shiny white (ours was black), with a subtle circle design. Even advocates of Mac-sexiness have to admit to its sense of style.

Lenovo IdeaPad S12

After two years, netbook designs have evolved from a 7-inch screen to a 10-inch screen, currently the industry standard. Now, the Lenovo IdeaPad S12, the third 12.1-inch netbook to hit the market, is helping to augur in the next generation of netbooks. With a list price of $499, the S12 is an attractive machine for consumers who want a highly portable netbook, but with a larger screen and keyboard. Its good ergonomics, long battery life, instant-on OS, and surprisingly loud speakers make it an Editors’ Choice pick. The S12 has similar design features common to other models in the IdeaPad line; not only does it share traits with the smaller S10-2, but its keyboard is also reminiscent of the larger IdeaPad Y450. While it has the same polarizing pattern on its lid (which is either a subliminal advertisement for Target or misplaced nostalgia for 70s-era wallpaper), we like the S12’s design a bit more than the S10-2, mainly owing to its larger size. While its edges are still beveled like the S10-2, they’re not as pronounced, making the S12 seem more like the original S10, whose boxier design we admired.
