In one of the closer races in recent years, the Lenovo H420 (7752-1YU), midrange desktopputs on a good show against similarly-priced systems. While its specs may include a speedy Core i3 processor, low price tag ($599.99 list at Office Depot), and gargantuan 1.5TB internal hard drive, it's not enough to beat the Gateway DX4860-UB33P ($599.99 list, 4 stars) in speed tests and advanced features. The H420 (7752-1YU) is built into a fairly innocuous tower chassis. It has the usual glossy black front panel, though this one has a red stripe setting off about a third of the panel that's meant to look like brushed grey metal. The desktop's DVD burner is situated near the top of the front panel, with two USB 2.0 ports, a memory card reader, and audio ports below it. The rest of the system is matte black aluminum. The back panel has the remainder of the system's I/O ports: four more USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet, VGA, HDMI out, and an antenna for the 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi card. All in all a decent smattering of ports, but it would have been nice if a couple of the USB ports used the newer, faster USB 3.0 standard. Inside the chassis, there's room for an additional hard drive, a PCIe x16 graphics card, and two PCIe x1 expansion cards.
What happens when you strip a system to the bare essentials? You get something like the Lenovo H420 (7752-3FU) ($479.99 list at Staples), a desktop PC equipped with a dual-core processor, 6GB of memory, and a full 1TB hard drive, for a price that was unthinkable just a few years ago. It's just enough satisfy day-to-day needs, but it really won't wow you. This PC could be the right one for someone whose last hand-me-down system is so old that it's beige. The H420-FU is your standard tower PC, with some room for expansion. It's fairly nondescript for the consumer space: It has the usual glossy black front and matte sides, with some orange/red piping as accents around the chassis, and a Lenovo logo front and center. The front panel has a couple of USB 2.0 ports, a media card reader and jacks for headphone and microphone. The back is equally as utilitarian: four more USB 2.0 ports, VGA, Ethernet, PS/2 mouse and keyboard ports, audio jacks, and a HDMI-out port. HDMI means you can hook the system up to a large screen like an HDTV. Inside, there's some space for limited upgrades. The system has the usual three PCIe x1 card slots and PCIe x16 graphics card slot, but there are only two memory DIMM slots (most desktops have four total).
