Lenovo has hit the mark once again with its excellent G560. Boasting impressive usability and performance, this is one of the best laptops we've seen at this price point, and its few small quirks don't detract from an excellent overall user experience. This laptop is such a success because it gets the basics right. The keyboard is fantastic, providing a crisp and firm action that will suit those that need a computer for typing essays or reports, or inputting data. It's just a shame that the Control (Ctrl) key has been indented one space and replaced by the Function (Fn) key, although we found we eventually got used to this. A dedicated numeric keypad has been included, but it's a little cramped due to the large keys employed in the main keyboard. Similarly, the directional keys are very close together and those with large fingers might struggle at first. The 15.6-inch screen is beaten by the MSI CR620-643uk, but that's only due to the latter's excellence. This display is still impressive, providing a great deal of detail thanks to the 1366 x 768-pixel resolution, and both colour vibrancy and brightness are excellent. If you want your photos and movies to look their best, then the G560 does a more than competent job.
Shopping for a budget laptop can be a daunting task. You're forced to make decisions between fashion and function, to sacrifice features for a smaller price tag, and deal with gobs of bloatware in your quest for a laptop that fits your financial needs. While most budget laptops force you to make significant compromises in order to find a deal, the Lenovo G560-0679AKU ($599 list from Tiger Direct) manages to fit your budget without making many sacrifices. It has a 500GB hard drive, a dual-core Core i3 CPU, and a 720p widescreen display. As with most budget laptops, the G560-0679AKU's chassis is made of plastic. While some low priced laptops have tried to draw attention with bright colors and finishes, like the candy colored shell of the Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4025 ($498 list, 3 stars), Lenovo has gone for a more sedate look, covering the G560 in matte gray. The plastic chassis has very little flex to it, and molded into the lid is a ridge for improved grip while carrying. The laptop itself measures 1.4 by 15 by 9.6 inches (HWD), and weighs 5.3 pounds, on a par with other 15-inch desktop replacement laptops. The full-size keyboard has a chiclet-style layout, with a compact numeric pad, which is common for 15.6-inch laptops.
