LaCie Rugged Mini (1TB) Storage Drive Review

With the Rugged Mini, LaCie makes its Rugged line of portable hard drives even smaller. Built to withstand a ton (literally), the shockingly bright orange Rugged Mini combines speedy USB 3.0 read/write capabilities with damage-resistant technology. Read on to find out how this $189 1 TB drive stacks up against the competition.Click to EnlargeThe Rugged Mini features a very workmanlike aesthetic. A lifejacket-orange rubber sleeve surrounds the sides of the drive. Beneath this, the Rugged Mini somewhat disappointingly combines a classy brushed-metal aluminum surface with an unfortunately inelegant box frame, which lacks the rounded corners and generally sleek design common among most portable hard drives.The good news is that the Rugged Mini offers greater protection than the standard portable hard drive. Thanks to its rubber sleeve, the drive is shock-resistant up to a height of 1.2 meters, can withstand up to 1 ton of pressure, and is also rain-resistant. The Buffalo MiniStation Extreme, which also features a rugged design, is shock-resistant up to a height of 2 meters, but lacks the rain and pressure resistance of the Rugged Mini.

External Drive Reviews: HDDs & SSDs

Today we're looking at a member of LaCie's Rugged range of external hard drives, in the shape of the Mini, a tough external hard drive with a self-powered USB 3.0 interface. The LaCie Rugged Mini external hard drive has the same basic design as the larger Rugged drive: it's shock resistant for falls from heights of up 1.2 m and splash resistant too. LaCie also claims that it's new hard drive still worked perfectly after going under the wheels of a one tonne car. We've got used to excellent performances from LaCie's Rugged range and today's product is no exception, and is right at the top of the table. With read speeds of 116 MB/s and write speeds of 114 MB/s, it even comes close to rivaling larger 3.5'' format drives. With a volume of 220 cm³, the Mini is smaller than previous Rugged drives. It slides very easily into a pocket, especially now that you can remove the rubber sleeve, which slims it down to 124 cm³, making it the smallest 2.5'' drive yet. But be careful—without the extra rubber, it's less resistant.

LaCie Rugged Mini (500GB)

The LaCie Rugged Mini (500GB) ($114.99 list) is a fast USB 3.0 drive that can take some abuse. Its rescue orange–colored bumper advertises that it can take a (slight) beating and continue working. It's the drive for tossing into the daily commute bag or for carting around in checked luggage, and as long as you're traveling in the First World the drive should arrive with your data intact. But there are more extreme ruggedized drives out there. The Rugged Mini is an aluminum-shelled drive with an unmistakable orange shock bumper around its perimeter. There's a pass-through for the USB 3.0 cable and a tiny drive access LED, but otherwise there aren't too many distinguishing features on the drive. The bumper has grid lines molded into its surface, similar to the design on the older version of the Rugged Mini (the one with FireWire and USB), and it's robust enough to let LaCie claim the drive can survive a drop of 1.2 meters (about 4 feet 3 inches). Other drives like the Iomega eGo BlackBelt Mac Edition ($199.99 list, 4 stars) are rated for a seven-foot drop. The Rugged Mini is also rain-proof, but not sealed for immersion.
