Product Survey: External Hard Drives

With the Rikiki, LaCie is giving us a 2.5 inch hard drive that is pretty much as small as it can get. It is hardly any bigger than the dimensions of the drive inside the device. Of course this limits the Rikiki and connectivity is comprised of a single USB 2.0 socket. Note also that the cable is also limited, measuring no more than 10 cm! The Rikiki does nevertheless come in numerous versions (250, 320, 500 and 640 GB) - something for everyone! Note also the excellent finish of the metal casing, which gives a very solid impression. As is often the case, performance is limited by the USB 2.0 interface which saturates at around 30 MB/s at best: Speeds measured with CrystalDiskMark. Access times are nothing exeptional and are just below average for external drives all categories combined: Access times with AS-SSD. Lastly, the PCMark Vantage index shows the limits of USB 2.0 hard drives in practice with various pieces of software: PCMark Vantage index and associated speeds. The performance results across these tests aren't exceptional then, but we have to say that we didn't expect any better from a hard drive using the USB 2.0 interface.

LaCie Rikiki 250GB review

The LaCie Rikiki (it's French for 'tiny') is one of the smallest portable drives around, fitting snugly in your laptop bag or even your pocket. Its knock-resistant brushed aluminium casing is ideal for transportation, and it's available in 250GB, 500GB and 640GB capacities. Rikiki comes with a few extras. The LaCie Setup Assistant makes formatting to suit your requirements a simple task, which is useful if you're not used to formatting hard drives. It also comes bundled with 10GB of online storage through Wuala for a year, and a copy of Intego Backup Assistant, which is unlikely to tempt SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner users to switch.Speed testIn our tests, the Rikiki averaged sequential read speeds of 22.8MB per second and write speeds of 20.3MB per second. Its random read and write speeds were 9.6MB/s and 15.1MB/s respectively – acceptable but fairly unremarkable. It would have been faster if the bundled USB Boost transfer accelerator wasn't Windows-only. The drive comes replete with a space-savingly short (18cm) USB lead, but we would have preferred an integrated cable, even at the price of a slightly larger form factor.

LaCie Rikiki Review

We review the LaCie Rikiki portable hard drive, one of the smallest mobile hard drives on the market today.If James Bond carried a portable hard drive, it would be LaCie’s Rikiki. Sure, his version would fire harpoons and self-destruct with the press of a button, but it would look – and function – a lot like this little wonder. The Rikiki, which means “tiny” in French, is among the smallest and subsequently most portable hard drives on the market and it doesn’t sacrifice speed or jack up the price to get there.Like LaCie’s similarly simple-but-refined Network Space 2, the Rikiki elevates “black box” to an art form. The chassis is just a rectangle extruded from aluminum and anodized black, but the sharp edges and brushed “grain” give it more character than anything you can mold out of plastic.An inconspicuous LED indicator light and USB jack are the only mars on an otherwise smooth case, besides the subtle LaCie embossing on each plastic end cap.At 4.3 inches long, 2.9 wide and half an inch thick, the Rikiki lives up to its name: It’s skinnier than Western Digital’s My Passport Elite, a full inch shorter than Iomega’s eGo, and beats Seagate’s Free Agent Go by the same measure. Unless you want to go solid state, you really can’t get much smaller.
