External Drive Reviews: HDDs & SSDs

LaCie is updating its range of external hard drives by adding USB 3.0 interfaces. One such example is the new Minimus range we're testing today. Like most of its LaCie stablemates, it has a solid aluminium frame. There are two ports at the pack: on the extreme right, there's a micro USB 3.0 port that's backwards compatible with USB 2.0. That can't power a 3.5'' drive, so there's also a power port which connects to a wall adaptor. On the inside, there's a Samsung HD103SI hard drive, which rotates at 7200 rpm and has 32 MB of cache and a SATA-2 interface on the inside. Unsurprisingly, this hard drive put in an excellent performance. The USB 3.0 interface allows it to reach read speeds of 114 MB/s, but it's the write speed of 112 MB/s that's even more impressive. As we mentioned above, the Minimus has an aluminium frame which also acts as a heatsink, meaning there's no need for a bulky fan. Overall, the whole thing occupies a volume of 650 cm³, smaller than most of its rivals which are in the 820-890 cm³.
