Kingston HyperX 240GB Solid State Drive Review

If you know anything about Kingston you know their HyperX line. HyperX is the name they give all of their high-end products. Kingston entered the solid state drive market with the SSDNow series of drives, but it was about time the put the HyperX name on a solid state drive. The HyperX solid state drive is a SATA 6GB/s drive powered by the SandForce SF-2281 controller, 25nm Intel NAND and boasts speeds of 555MB/s read and 510MB/s write. Kingston sent us the upgrade kit that includes a USB enclosure, 3.5-inch mounting bracket, SATA data cable, screwdriver and hard drive cloning software. Let’s take a look... Special thanks to Kingston for providing us with the HyperX 240GB Solid State Drive to review. The HyperX upgrade kit comes in a nice retail box. On the front there is a little bit of information on the drive. It does say 525MB/s read and 480MB/s write, but that was an error on the packaging. To give you a good idea of how the HyperX solid state drive comes and to give you a brief overview of the drive check out the video below.

Kingston HyperX 240GB SATA 6Gbit/s SSD Review

It is with great pleasure that we are now reviewing the Kingston HyperX SSD. Kingston has for several years offered one of the most expansive lineups in SSDs by utilizing controllers from almost every manufacturer - with one sole, notable exception: SandForce. The HyperX branding is Kingston's enthusiast grade memory brand, but it now also signifies Kingston's enthusiast SSD offering. In the past we have generally found Kingston's SSDs to be quite favorable, in particular the value-friendly offerings that utilized Toshiba controllers, so it is great to see the company now stepping in to the enthusiast market. More competition in the SSD market from a reputable technology company is always a good thing. When it comes to SSDs, SandForce literally has become a household name and it isn't hard to see why. While the first generation of SF-1200 drives delivered very good performance, the second generation SF-2200 controller simply dominates the market with read performance capable of exceeding 500MB/s in some usage scenarios, with writes and heavy I/O equally well-covered. The HyperX is Kingston's first SSD to utilize a SandForce controller, and as one might expect it is the SF-2281.

Kingston HyperX 240GB SSD review

There are two new drives in the HyperX range with 120GB and 240GB capacities, but the flagship 240GB is the one we're looking at here. Since these drives are aimed at the high performance end of the market, it makes sense that Kingston has teamed up with SandForce, and its new drives make use of the latest SF-2281 controllers. It may seem like Kingston has been a bit slow off the mark – the controller it's chosen has been around for a while – but if there's one thing Kingston is known for, its making bulletproof products. By working closely with SandForce and putting the drives through its own rigorous testing and qualification procedures, Kingston has tried to alleviate the notorious reliability issues that plague some SandForce controllers, hence the delayed release. Whatever Kingston may or may not have done to improve the controller's reliability, it seems to have tweaked its performance, because the HyperX 240 is the fastest 2.5-inch drive we have tested so far. It gave outstanding sequential read/write figures of 553MB/s and 516MB/s respectively in the ATTO benchmark, making it a little faster than OCZ's Vertex 3.

Kingston HyperX 240GB SSD Review

Although Kingston hasn't made as big of a name for itself in the high-end SSD market as Intel and OCZ have, the company has remained highly competitive by focusing on the budget segment. Although its oft-used Toshiba controllers have modest read and write speeds of around 200MB/s, the Kingston SSDNow V+ range delivers surprisingly strong and affordable performance. On that particular drive Windows 7 boot times are surprisingly fast, plus the low power consumption means you should get a little more life out of mobile devices. While Kingston has been content with Toshiba's controllers, it seems like everyone else jumped aboard the SandForce express. The SandForce SF-1200 (1222) controller was a big hit, with the shortlist of SSDs using it includes the ADATA S599, Corsair Force, G.Skill Phoenix, Mushkin Callisto, OCZ Vertex 2, Super Talent FT, Patriot Inferno, and Team Group Xtreem-S1. There were many others, but you get the point. Furthermore, manufacturers didn't stop at a single SF-1200-based SSD. For example, OCZ released numerous iterations with the same SandForce chip, including the Vertex 2, Agility 2, Onyx 2 and RevoDrive.

Kingston HyperX 240GB SATA III SSD

SandForce first announced their latest SF-2281 controller back in February 2011. Designed for the SATA III 6 Gbps interface, the release of the controller was anticipated, though not many manufacturers actually started delivering new SSDs with the upgraded controller till mid 2011. The OCZ Vertex 3 Pro SSD is of the few SF-2xxx based SSDs that we heard of and seen performance benchmarks for at the beginning of this year. Though we are glad to say that other major memory manufacturers such as Kingston and Patriot have finally joined the race for the fastest SSD, with their latest SandForce 2xxx series SSDs. Kingston's latest HyperX series 240GB 2.5" SATA III 6Gbps Solid State Drive is one of the drives designed to meet the highest performance standards designed for the SandForce SF-2281 controller. It uses Intel's 25nm Compute NAND flash memory, which has 5K programmable/erasable cycles as compared to 3K for standard NAND. While the box to the left is labeled with performance numbers of 525MB/sec. read and 480MB/sec. write, according to Kingston, the drive was able to reach 555MB/sec. read and 510MB/sec. write in ATTO Disk Benchmark 2.41.
