Kingston's HyperX brand has a good reputation in memory components, such as the Kingston HyperX Genesis 2,133MHZ 16GB RAM, and in solid state hard drives such as the Kingston HyperX 240GB SSD. Get moreThe latest computing news and features from TechRadarBut can the products Kingston creates for the outside of our PCs work as well as the ones inside them? Our first impressions of the Kingston HyperX 64GB DataTraveler 3.0 USB flash drive is encouraging. It has a huge capacity - more than enough for holding your movies, music and documents. Still, if 64GB isn't enough, you can get 128GB or the absolutely huge (capacity wise) 256GB versions. The drive is encased in a solid casing that does a good job of protecting it. The only minor complaint we have here is that the cap that protects the USB plug could be easily lost, making the Kingston HyperX DataTraveler 3.0 more susceptible to damage. It's also a bit bulky, which might mean you have to rearrange your USB devices plugged into your PC to ensure it fits. The USB 3.0 interface makes transferring your large files to and from the Kingston HyperX DataTraveler 3.0 nice and quick.
When Kingston released its first high-performance USB 3.0 product last summer, the DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0, we had wondered if and when we'd see a HyperX variant. After all, HyperX products have typically offered "ultimate" performance, so to us, the two naming schemes seemed to clash. But as we discovered last month, Kingston in its traditional fashion didn't want to rush an enthusiast part out the door early, but let things settle down so that the first HyperX release is one that deserves its name. With the "Ultimate" and "HyperX" models both offering great performance, who is each model designed for? Similar to mainstream SSDs vs. enthusiast ones, the Ultimate 3.0 models are designed for those who don't need the best performance on the planet but still much better than normal. The HyperX on the other hand is for those who do want the best performance possible. The G2 version of the Ultimate 3.0 series is clocked at 100MB/s read and 80MB/s write, while the HyperX 3.0 boosts that to 225MB/s read and 135MB/s write. When seeing these specs on "paper", it's easy to see how one is set to differ from the other. And to think, at the time of the Ultimate 3.0's launch last summer, we already saw speeds of at least 3x USB 2.0.
By now, USB 3.0 has been out for quite a while. Most performance, enthusiast, and extreme level motherboards now have USB 3 ports for the front and rear panels. To meet the needs of this crowd, Kingston has released the DataTraveler HyperX 3.0 flash drive. These flash drives use the USB 3.0 standard, and are reported to be Kingston's fastest flash drives, with stunning speeds of 225MB/s read and 135MB/s write when plugged into a USB 3 port. The drives are available in 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB versions. We previously reviewed the Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 Gen 2 flash drive, which was Kingston's flash drive when it was first released in mid-2011. We'll be comparing the two drives to see how they perform (keep in mind they are targeted to two different demographics of user). Shown above is the 256GB version of the DT HyperX 3.0; today, we're testing the 64GB version, which retails for $150 USD on Newegg. The flash drive comes in the standard hard plastic packaging, which may be a little difficult to remove. However, we managed to remove it with a heavy pair of scissors. The packaging has relevant information written on it, such as capacity and warranty. The package also proudly boasts the HyperX logo and the transfer speeds.
