It's been just over a year since Intel unveiled the first six-core consumer processor, the Core i7-980X. Combining all of Intel's then-hottest technologies, it gave both die-hard enthusiasts and professionals who regularly deal in highly threaded apps something to drool over: With a 3.33-GHz clock speed and lots of threads and cache, it redefined "fast" for desktop PCs. But with the advent of the midrange "Sandy Bridge" chips in January, and their technology innovations likely to implemented into Intel's high-end "tick" later in 2011, it was clear the Core i7-980X wouldn't cut it for much longer. Now replacing it at the uppermost extreme of Intel's lineup is the Core i7-990X, which bumps up the clock speed but leaves all of the Core i7-980X's numerous pluses and major minus (its $999 list price) intact. That means that, in terms of strict technology, there's not a lot of difference between the original processor and this update. Both are based on the 32nm Gulftown core design, the most recent evolution of the 45nm Nehalem microarchitecture that appeared with the first Core i7 chips in late 2008.
Monstrous. We think that's a fairly apt term for a processor like the Intel Core i7 990X Extreme Edition. It's vast, and possibly a little vulgar, in terms of sheer size, performance and importantly cost. The i7 990X is one of Intel's classic Extreme Edition class CPUs; beyond the grasp of most mere mortals and more powerful than most of us could possibly need. It follows in the footsteps of Intel's other hexcore processors, like the Intel Core i7 970 and drops in almost identical footfalls as the Intel Core i7 980X, itself another Extreme Edition. When we looked at that first six-core Gulftown chip almost a year ago exactly our initial reaction was "a CPU you don't need at a price you can't afford." Twelve months down the line and that has at least changed.Unfortunately for Intel though it hasn't exactly changed in favour of another £800 processor. With the relatively recent release of the Sandy Bridge platform we've now got frankly incredible quad-core performance CPUs for a fraction of the price of such a huge chip.So what possible use is the i7 990X?
What do you do when you're the fastest thing around? You just keep on WINNING. It's as if there was tiger blood coursing through your veins. You're so good, you're bi-winning. Heck, with a six core processor at your disposal, you'd be hexa-winning. Ol' Charlie needs one of these things to go with his rock-star life style. As desktop processors go, Intel's Core i7 900 series line-up is pretty much the Charlie of the computing world. Tiger blood and all, though people might ask what kind of drug you were on and the response would have to be "Core i" of course. It's a little like crack only it doesn't make you lose your voice. Though you might want to occasionally unplug the bastard because, dude, it fires in a way that, we don't know, might not be from this terrestrial realm. And the ladies. Well, let's just say that's not going to be a problem. Ever. And it's not about the money, honest. Ahh, it's good to be the king. Yeah. But let's move forward, shall we? Intel decided they would as well and recently they launched a speed bump of their flagship Extreme Edition Core i7 processor, known as the Core i7 990X.
