Intel Core i7-2700K

When Intel released its line of second-generation Core processors a year ago (under the \"Sandy Bridge” code name), it offered consumers new opportunities in various areas of CPU performance, regardless of how much you wanted to spend. The top chip at launch was the Core i7-2600K (4 stars), a four-core, eight-thread, 3.4GHz powerhouse that clearly defined the high end of the mainstream space. But as Sandy Bridge approached the end of its brief life span, a minor update was needed to help guide the family into a more Ivy Bridge–friendly world. That CPU, the Core i7-2700K ($332 list) was to serve as a bare replacement for the Core i7-2600K, without upsetting too many digital apple carts along the way. At that job, and any others required of it, it succeeds—if not dazzlingly. The Core i7-2700K represents a mere 100MHz speed bump above its predecessor, to 3.5GHz. But all of its other characteristics are identical: 8MB of cache, four cores and eight threads (thanks to Intel's Hyper-Threading technology), integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000, and the full line of shiny Sandy Bridge features, ranging from Turbo Boost 2.0 (which temporarily increases processing speed when the appropriate head room is available), Quick Sync Video (for faster rendering and conversion of video files), and so on.

CPU Reviews

The Intel Core i7 2700K CPU has almost identical tech sepcs to the Core i7 2600K. In fact, the only difference is the clock speed, with the 2700K boasting an extra 100 MHz. Out of the box, then, the four cores are clocked at 3.5 GHz and can be pushed up to 3.9 GHz with Turbo mode when not all of the cores are in use. This slight difference in speed pushes up performances a bit, as the i72700K as around 2% more powerful on average than the i7 2600K. That moves it even further ahead of the AMD FX 8150 which is 13% less powerful. More information about Intel's four-core Core i7 2000K processors can be found in our review of the Intel Core i7 2600K, including explanations of Turbo mode and Hyper-Threading. It also features an overview of the integrated graphics chip.

Intel Core i7 2700K review

The vanilla Sandy Bridge lineup has a new chip in the Intel Core i7 2700K . As well as populating a new socket with the Sandy Bridge E Intel Core i7 3960X, it has seen fit to give us another brilliant processor, but what makes it different to the Intel Core i7 2600K?Short answer: not a lot.Not that long ago, things moved fast in the CPU industry. Between 2005 and 2010, we progressed from piffling little 100 million transistor single-core desktop CPUs to six-core, billion-trannie mofos capable of implausible feats of number crunching.During that period, the technology used to knock out computer chips has powered ahead, too. We've transitioned through 90nm, 65nm, 45nm and 32nm silicon, with 22nm CPUs just around the corner. Along the way, we've picked up all manner of fabulous new chip tech, including SOI, strained silicon and latterly tri-gate and 3D transistors. It was relentless stuff.Indeed, Intel has committed itself to rolling out either a new CPU architecture or a new production process every single year. And yet here we are at the apex of 2011 and 2012 wondering where it's all gone wrong. The evidence comes in the form of both of Intel's new PC processors.
