Intel Core i3-2100

If you're planning to build a budget desktop PC and you're determined to use current parts, the least-expensive Intel option available to you is the Core i3-2100 ($117 list). Still a part of Intel's second-generation Core (\"Sandy Bridge”) family, it contains most of the bells and whistles of its more powerful (and expensive) cousins, the Core i5-2500K and the Core i7-2600K, but predictably little of the power. It will do the trick for a modest-needs machine, but for stronger processing potential you'll want something faster; and if even basic gaming is your goal, a discrete video card—or considering a system based on AMD's newest technology instead—will be a better bet. Like all the latest Core CPUs, the Core i3-2100 is based on Intel's 32nm production process. It's a dual-core chip clocked at 3.1GHz, but it can operate up to four processing threads at once due to Hyper-Threading. It does not, however, support Turbo Boost, so you can't count on extra bursts if speed if you have idling cores (which, given that this chip only has two, makes sense).

Intel Core i3 2100

Intel had a major setback with their Sandy Bridge launch due to the Cougar Town chipset defect. However, the issue of defective SATA III ports on Cougar Town chipset boards should not cause too many problems. Nonetheless, because of the chipset problem, the retail sales of the Sandy Bridge board were delayed and retailers halted sales of the processor. About a few weeks ago, replacement B3 stepping boards appeared on e-tail sites such as Newegg, and sales of the second-generation Core series processor have resumed. Those who have been waiting for an upgrade to the Sandy Bridge architecture can began buying the components once again. Sandy Bridge is probably one of the best processors that money can buy at the moment. It performs well, has low power consumption, and is well within acceptable pricing. We all know that the fastest Sandy Bridge, the Core i7 2600K, is lightning-fast and is almost able to compete against the powerhouse Core i7 980X in all but highly-threaded and extremely memory-intensive applications. But at a third the pricing of the Core i7 980X, it is hard to say no to such a powerful chip. However, not everyone needs the fastest processor, or willing to spend tons of money just to have the bragging rights.

CPU Reviews

The Core i3 2000 processors from Intel are the entry-level option in its Sandy Bridge range of CPUs. They don't have all the latest bells and whistles, but they're a little more affordable. After a thorough inspection in our lab, we've reached our verdict on this Core i3 2100—and it's not all bad news. In technical terms, the Core i3 2000 CPUs are dual-core processors which use Hyper-threading. This feature is designed to optimise performance for with software designed for use with multiple cores. Each core is effectively doubled up—creating two new 'logical' cores—to more efficiently divide up the work when a lot of processor power is needed. On the other hand, there's no Turbo mode. The Core i3 2100's two cores both run at 3.1 GHz, no matter whether you're using both of them or just one. This chip's real strength is its low energy consumption. When it's working hard, our test workstation only required a total of 128 W. That's 18 W less than the Core i5 680 from the previous generation which had a largely similar overall performance.
