Intel plunged into the ocean of next-generation solid-state drives (SSDs) with its release of the SSD 510 Series ($584 list, 4 stars), which utilized Marvell controllers supporting 6Gbps SATA III technology and thus delivered much faster speeds than previous 3Gbps SATA II drives. The 300GB Intel SSD 320 Series drive ($529 list), is a step back in one significant way: It only uses SATA II. It does offer some other features and innovations of value, but if you're looking for the fastest SSD out there, this isn't it. With the 320, you do get Intel's state-of-the-art 25nm NAND flash memory. But in addition to a 64MB SDRAM cache, it's paired with the same controller used in Intel's second-generation X25-M - from 2009. Additional features have been implemented in the firmware, chief among them full-disk encryption (with 128-bit AES) and NAND redundancy to protect your data in case of a power outage. The NAND means that in almost all cases, the 320 is going to be faster and more energy-efficient than was the X25-M; the new security features should make the drive more reliable. Intel officially announced the new SSD 320 Series drives yesterday, which feature proprietary Intel SSD controllers paired to cutting edge 25nm NAND flash memory. This new family of drives, however, isn't geared for ultra-high performance. While still fast, the overarching goals with the Intel SSD 320 series were increased reliability and security. In fact, despite being released after the SSD 510 series which we took a look at a few weeks back, these technically newer 320 series drives do not feature support for the faster SATA III 6Gbps interface and are SATA II 3Gbps only. We've got an Intel SSD 320 series 300GB drive on hand and have run it through a complete suite of tests to gauge its performance versus competing solid state offerings. The full list of features and specifications of Intel's newest drive are outlined below, along with some technical details and a few close-up shots of its internals. Take a close look at the pics and you'll notice the new SSD 320 series drive we tested actually has something major in common with the X25-M that was first released in 2008. The Intel SSD 320 Series 300GB Drive Here she is.
When Intel first launched its X25-M SSD in 2008, the chip-maker helped start a new era of high-performance solid state drives with reasonable prices. However, in the last three years, Intel has only updated its mainstream SSD once, while facing stiff competition from over a dozen other players. In fact, in our most recent SSD round-up, Intel's 120GB X25-M drive trailed drives from Samsung, OCZ, and Crucial by a wide margin. Now here comes the new Intel SSD 320 ($529 for 300GB, starting at $89 for 40GB), which promises not only blazing performance but offers strong encryption. Can Intel reclaim its leadership position? With the launch of the SSD 320, Intel has updated its controller, with the goal of dramatically improving performance, particularly write speeds. However, the drive does not take advantage of the new SATA 6Gb/s interface that just become available on notebooks for the first time with the release of Intel's 2nd Generation Core Series processors and chipsets in January 2011. This means that the SSD 320 will work with these newer notebooks, but it won't achieve the groundbreaking speeds of Intel's new SSD 510 (starting at $369 for 120GB).
