HP Z1 Workstation Review

This summer HP has brought on a beast of a business machine in the Z1 all-in-one Workstation, complete with an upgradable set of innards and all-in-one style. The display is a massive LED-backlit 27-inch IPS panel at 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution and inside you've got several configurations available straight from HP, each of them landing in at right around $2,700 USD in the end. You'll be working with an Intel Core i3 processor, Windows 7 or Linux, and the whole machine is easier to modify than your sub sandwich - fabulous for the tech-friendly business owner. This beast is heavier than you'll ever want to wish to carry at a back-breaking 21.32 kg (47 lbs). You've got a beast of a display up on two different hinges, this allowing you to adjust both the angle and the height at which the display sits. Once you've got it where you want it, you'll probably want to leave it alone, though, as the weight of this conglomeration of metal, plastic, and glass is not the easiest thing to move around. The monitor sits on its two hinges mightily, both of them making sure that this heaving beast does not move even the slightest bit once its set in place.

HP Z1 Workstation review

Some all-in-one PCs are designed to sit prettily in the corner of your living room, acting as office manager for the parents and entertainment centre for the kids. The HP Z1 Workstation is no such thing, packed as it is full of powerful components, with an enormous high-resolution screen that's suited to professionals working with photos and videos. My review model came with an Intel Xeon processor, 8GB of RAM and an Nvidia Quadro 1000M graphics card. It's available now from the HP online store for £2,920.When you first lay eyes on the Z1, you'll no doubt be immediately struck by its enormous size. Make no mistake, this is an absolute goliath. It's rather reminiscent of someone dumping a huge, marble gravestone on your desk -- only less morbid. The sheer size is to accommodate a 27-inch screen, which makes it particularly useful for graphics professionals who need the display real estate not offered by smaller machines. It's a whopping 660mm wide and 584mm high, so you're going to need ample desk space to house it. Make sure it's a sturdy piece of furniture to cope with the epic 22kg weight. The Z1 is a workstation designed for professional users.

HP Z1 Workstation

The HP Z1 is in a new category: the all-in-one professional workstation. It's powerful, easy to service, and has a beautiful 27-inch screen. It has ISV certifications, if your business needs to consider that for pitching projects. Even if certification isn't a consideration, the speed, accurate screen, and professional grade components will pique the scientist in you. If you know you need a workstation and are space constrained, the Z1 should be on your short list. The Z1 essentially looks like a large all-in-one desktop PC, which is to say it also looks just like a large-screen professional monitor. It's centered on a huge 27-inch LED-backlit IPS display with a 2,560 by 1,440 resolution. For comparison, the only other all in one desktop to match this resolution and size is the Apple iMac 27-inch (Thunderbolt) ($1,999 list, 4 stars), which is aimed at some of the same audience (the graphics arts folk). The system is hooked up to a dual-hinged articulated arm, so it is easily adjusted for height and tilt. It can be tilted from horizontal (parallel to your work surface) to vertical, so it can accommodate workers who are used to drafting tables. With the size of the screen and the horizontal position, you can collaborate on a conference table or other group environment.
