The HP Pavilion dm4 Beats Edition is a multimedia notebook with a slim form factor. HP is marketing the dm4 with a Beats Audio theme and with an emphasis on its affordability and ability to offer decent performance.Overview Build & DesignThe first thing you'll notice about the 14-inch HP Pavilion dm4 is its Beats Audio theme, because you can't miss it. The display cover sports the familiar red and black "b" that's designed to look like an earbud, the keys on the keyboard are oddly covered in red, and the rest of the notebook is a deep shade of black. The design is attractive, but the matte surfaces will pick up finger prints and dust very easily - keep a microfiber cloth handy because you'll be cleaning it often. The form factor is slim and lightweight at 13.30 x 8.85 x 0.96~1.27 inches and 4.33 pounds. Build quality is questionable in some places and decent in others. The display bends easily at the corners; in fact, the plastics it was constructed with bends so easily that it's very worrisome. If you press down on the display cover, though, it doesn't budge much. The entire chassis is built thick and solid - it doesn't budge at all even when we press down heavily.
The HP Pavilion dm4 Beats Edition does a lot for a little. The moderately priced laptop boasts sturdy, striking design, powerful speakers, a generous allotment of external ports, good battery life, and an Intel Core i5 processor. It's not perfect in every way, but it's a solid laptop for the busy audiophile on a budget, with an eye for the urbane. The Beats brand is endorsed by rapper and hip-hop producer Dr. Dre. So it should come as no surprise that style and high-quality sound components come standard. The aesthetic appeal of the slim profile and matte-black, brushed-aluminum case of our 14-inch review model can't be denied. The dm4, which starts at $900 and peaks out at around $2000 fully loaded, looks and feels great. Typing on the backlit red-on-black keys is a breeze. An inch thick, this 4.5-pound all-purpose laptop slips neatly into any work-sized bag without weighing you down. Despite its compact frame, the dm4 packs a punch and goes toe-to-toe with the specs of many laptops in its class. It has a generous allotment of three USB ports (one 2.0 and two 3.0), as well as two display ports (VGA and HDMI), an SD/MMC memory card input, and an ethernet port.
The middle-of-the-road multimedia laptops that come out of HP have always been excellent examples of the style. They typically bring some upscale design buzz--but not too much in the way of extra features or components--while keeping prices down. Our configuration of the HP Pavilion dm4 worked out to cost $979 (that is with a temporary price break from $1,079). For $1,050, the Lenovo IdeaPad Y460 offers similar specs, but includes an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650. A similar part (a 1GB ATI Radeon 5450) is available for the customizable dm4, but it'll add an extra $200 to the price. That said, the default hard-drive speed is 7,200rpm for the HP and only 5,400rpm for the Lenovo. A better all-around deal may be the 15-inch Samsung R580, which has both upgraded graphics and a Blu-ray drive for $829. Of those three, however, the HP dm4 has the slickest look, taking design elements, including a large multitouch touch pad, from the more expensive HP Envy series. As a close cousin of the 13-inch HP dm3, the new dm4 shares a similar metallic body. But, rather than the brushed-metal look of the dm3, this model has an etched pattern of angular lines--almost like Nazca lines--along the wrist rest and back of the lid.
Like the rest of the industry, HP has taken a huge liking to metals. So much so, that its entire line of laptops (netbooks not included) has been updated with this design material. The HP Pavilion dm4 ($905 direct) is not only covered in them, but it's one of the lightest laptops in the 14-inch category, and yet it toppled the competition in speed tests. Its major flaw is the gesture-enabled touchpad, which proved to be more bothersome than helpful. Metals used to be reserved for HP's luxury and business enterprise laptops, such as the HP Envy 13 ($1,899 direct, ) and the HP EliteBook 2540p ($1,629 direct, ). Now, these materials, which have been a mark of design excellence, are finding their way into affordable mainstream laptops. The Pavilion dm4's chassis is similar to that of the Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch (Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz) ($1,199 direct, ), only darker in color and adorned with imprints. This imprinting technology is carried over from the previous line, but in a different manner: All the patterns are now laser-etched on to the cover, similar to engravings. Since aluminum metals are easier to mold than plastics, the dm4 measures less than a 1-inch thick, which is much thinner than its predecessor - the Pavilion dv4-2153cl ($749.99 list, ).
Delivering a striking metal design and fast Core i5 performance, the HP dm4 packs practically everything you could want in a thin-and-light notebook. This 4.4-pound machine (starting at $729; $904 as configured) also sports an excellent webcam, and instant-on mode for getting online in a hurry, and software that makes it easy to Hulu and other media. However, the dm4’s somewhat frustrating touchpad prevents it from getting an even higher rating. The dm4 is about as thin (1.3 inches), light (4.4 pounds), and metallic as the 4.2-pound dm3, but with a few changes. While it still has a pale bronze aluminum lid and chassis and magnesium bottom, the surface is now mostly smooth, with the exception of some artful etchings that stretch across the lid and are mirrored on the palm rest (the dm3, in contrast, has a smooth lid and brushed palm rest). HP also saw to it that the touchpad and the indented area surrounding the keyboard all have gently rounded edges, a subtle, but nice, touch. Aside from the champagne color and its etched design, the dm4 bears some resemblance to Apple’s MacBook Pro line, thanks to its black, island-style keyboard with integrated multimedia buttons, as well as its trackpad that integrates touch buttons.
