HP Omni 27-1015t
If you're an avid movie watcher or video hobbyist, you probably already know about the video-friendly all-in-one desktop PC, the HP Omni 27. With the release of Intel's third-generation processing platform the Omni has gotten a hardware refresh. The new HP Omni 27-1015t offers faster processing and a double the hard drive capacity. Unfortunately, it drops the Blu-ray drive that came with the previous iteration. It's a move that hobbles the appeal of this all-in-one desktop, and wastes the potential of its 27-inch HD display. But in terms of other features and performance, the Omni 27-1015t is still a solid system. Outwardly identical to the Editors' Choice HP Omni 27 , the Omni 27-1015t features the same edge-to-edge glass covered 27-inch display, complete with true 1080p resolution (1,920 by 1,080). It's large enough - and sharp enough - to use as your primary television screen, with HDMI input giving the all-in-one monitor capability for another PC or game console. Though beautiful, the display lacks touch-screen functionality, as we've seen in the similarly-priced Sony VAIO L24 (SVL24114FXB) (though, it should be said, the Sony desktop's display is smaller at 24 inches).
HP Omni 27 Quad All-In-One Review
Earlier this year I had the opportunity to take a look at HP's TouchSmart 520 All-In-One, a 23-inch multi-touch system powered by a second-generation Intel Core i7 processor. The system was one of the best AIO solutions I reviewed to date, but that was before the HP Omni 27 showed up at my front door. The Omni 27 is another all-in-one system that shares many aesthetic characteristics of the TouchSmart 520 despite being in a different class. Inside we find a third-generation Intel Core i5-3550S Ivy Bridge processor clocked at 3.0GHz, 8GB of DDR3 memory, a 2TB Hitachi hard drive spinning at 7,200 RPM, Radeon HD 6550A graphics and Beats Audio. There's also an HDMI-in port so you could use this display as an HDTV to watch cable programming from a set-top box or play console games. As is standard practice, HP includes a wireless keyboard and mouse although since this unit doesn't include a TV tuner, there's no media remote control. Buyers will also receive a power cable and a large power brick similar to what you'd find bundled with a notebook computer. Our price as configured is $1,540.
HP Omni 27-1015t
As all-in-one desktops go, the HP Omni 27-1015t is a fairly standard entry. Though the screen is large and attractive, overall this machine lacks the “wow” factor necessary for it to stand out among the competition. Priced at $1549 as configured (as of July 6, 2012), this glossy 27-inch all-in-one could almost pass as an HDTV. It has a high-definition resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels, but unfortunately forgoes any kind of touch support. (This omission is disappointing with Windows 8 on the horizon, since touch-capable screens will get the most out of the new operating system.) You can tilt the screen slightly backward and forward, but at certain angles it tends to be reflective, making it difficult to use without some quick lighting adjustments. Performance The system comes with a Core i5-3550S, a low-power version of Intel's new Ivy Bridge processor. It runs at a standard speed of 3.0GHz, but can accelerate to 3.7GHz with Intel's Turbo Boost technology. In general, thanks to these newer, faster and more-efficient processors, machines housed in compact, all-in-one cases should offer better performance.
Reviews: All-in-One Computers
HP's new PC is the Omni 27, an all-in-one 27-inch computer that is a direct competitor to the Asus ET2700INTS and the Apple iMac 27". How does it compare to these powerhouses? Unpacking the Omni 27 is sort of like déjà-vu. The design is exactly identical to the TouchSmart 520, a 23" all-in-one. The back is made of plastic, the large base of aluminium and the sides of a metallic grey plastic. The only glossy bits are the screen and edges. It isn't a touchscreen, so there's no risk of leaving smudges. The Omni 27 comes with a keyboard and mouse that connect to the computer wirelessly via a tiny USB receiver. The keys on the keyboard (AAA batteries included) are quiet, though a bit dull to the touch. They're arranged in standard format, and the keyboard on the whole is perfectly suited for most people's needs. The mouse (AA batteries included) has just the basic left-click, right-click and scroll wheel, but it's a serious device. Unlike the one included with the TouchSmart 520, the lining is entirely matte (a good choice for those who doesn't like smudges).
HP Omni 27 Review
HP's made a name for its TouchSmart series of all-in-one desktops over the last few years, culminating in some quite desirable models as of late. But what about those consumers who want a large, stylish machine and have no particular need for expensive touchscreens? Enter the Omni 27, a self-contained PC with a gigantic 27-inch screen and a major in personal media, with a minor in usability tweaks for those of a less technical disposition. Read on to see how the Omni 27 stacks up against its more established competition. There's no getting around it: the Omni 27 is big. With all the size of a 27-inch LCD monitor plus considerable heft for desktop-grade components and a steel stand, the combined unit weighs in at around 35 pounds. While a little cumbersome to maneuver, once it's placed on your (big) desk or table, the weight is reassuring. The wide base connects to the display via a stylish pare of support brackets, doubling as adjustment arms that bend back to an angle of 25 degrees. Unlike some all-in-ones or monitor stands, the display stays put with almost no effort. Those with the inclination can remove the back panel and swap out the stand for a standard VESA mount.
HP Omni 27
If you're a video hobbyist or movie aficionado, you may be tempted to buy the HP Omni 27 ($1,249 direct) for both viewing and editing videos. You would be making a great choice, as the Omni 27's huge 27-inch 1080p HD screen is essentially a theater-sized screen when you're sitting a few feet away. It has the power to create and transcode video for distribution online, plus the built-in Blu-ray means you'll have access to the thousands of titles that aren't available on Netflix or other streaming services. Plus Blu-rays usually have the special features that film geeks love to view over and over. For this and other features, the HP Omni 27 earns our Editors' Choice award for midrange all-in-one desktop PCs. The Omni 27 looks like a ramped up version of the HP TouchSmart 520-1030 ($899.99 list, 3 stars) we saw last year. Instead of a 23-inch monitor, the Omni 27 has a huge 27-inch screen at the same true 1080p HD (1,920 by 1,080) resolution. The Omni 27 has a seamless, edge-to-edge piece of glass over the screen, since the system doesn't have to worry about supporting a touch interface. In contrast, the HP 520 has a raised bezel to accommodate the touch screen sensors.
HP Omni 27 Quad
Hewlett-Packard's Omni 27 doesn't match Apple's highest-end iMac in display resolution, but for anyone interested in using a Windows all-in-one as an entertainment hub, you will immediately appreciate the benefits of the Omni 27's large 1,920x1,080-pixel screen. With Windows 8 and other 27-inch all-in-ones on the horizon, you might be wise to put off any new PC purchase. Also consider that HP is asking $1,249 for the Omni 27, a rather high premium given the middling components surrounding its display. If I were in the market today for a large-screen all-in-one to stick in a den, a dorm room, or any other place I might want both a computer and a large screen, the HP Omni 27 is the best Windows-based pick right now in terms of screen size. The patient and the value-conscious should wait for the 27-inch all-in-one market to develop later this year. It will be interesting to see how all-in-one segmentation evolves once 27-inch screens become more common. So far, every Windows vendor but Sony regularly comes in under $1,699, the price of Apple's most affordable 27-inch iMac. Will 27-inch screens change that equation? It's reasonable that HP, Lenovo, or Samsung might charge more for a 27-inch all-in-one than for their existing 23-inch models.
