HP Mini 5103

The HP Mini 5103 is a corporate-oriented netbook that does just about everything right: It has a plethora of business and security features, an excellent keyboard and touchpad, and a touchscreen. However, performance is mundane, and a larger display would be nice--especially on a unit this pricey. The Mini 5103's configurations, and there are a lot of them, start at $399 and can run up to nearly $1000 even before including extended service and warranty plans. At this writing, the configuration we tested would set you back $649. If our test suite is to be believed, you gain little in the way of performance with the new dual-core 1.5GHz Intel Atom N550 processor. The Mini 5103's WorldBench score of 35 is similar to other Atom-based netbooks. The unit also felt sluggish during evaluation despite having 2GB of DDR3 memory and a 7200 rpm, 160GB Western Digital hard drive. The lethargic feel is common among business portables, but worse on netbooks. It's caused in no small part by all the "value-added" background apps and services doing everything from encrypting, to face recognition, to protecting the hard drive.

HP Mini 5103 Multitouch Review

The new HP Mini 5103 is an update to the previous 5102 netbook, adding the newest dual-core Intel Atom N455 to the spec-sheet. This 10.1-inch netbook can be configured with an optional multi-touch display and has a starting price of $399.99. Check out our review to see our verdict on this small system. Our HP Mini 5103 has the following specifications: Build and DesignThe HP Mini 5103 has a very business-like appearance with a squared-off chassis and rugged-looking brushed metal finish. The design hasn't changed much over the years, first seen with the Mini 5101 and the 5102 earlier this year. The appearance is almost as if the small and medium-business ProBook 4520s was hit with a shrinkray and this was the result. The brushed metal finish holds up well to daily abuse, but it seemed to attract a few fingerprints without much effort. The inside has a rubbery dark paint covering the palmrest with a glossy black touchpad recessed slightly below the surface. On top of the keyboard HP throws in two quick-launch buttons to launch an internet browser and default email client ... probably the two most used applications on a business notebook.

HP Mini 5103

For the longest time, the Intel Atom had been a single-core processor, and elite netbooks like the HP Mini 5102 ($400 direct, ) had used nothing but that. But recently, Intel released a dual-core version made specifically for netbooks called the N550 (1.5GHz), and HP wasted little time announcing the HP Mini 5103 ($650 street). It retains all of the things we loved about the 5102, including a sleek metallic frame, top-notch user experience, and even a touch screen. But the major upgrade revolves around the processor, and the Mini 5103 wasn't even sped up by all that much. Metal is a rarity in netbook designs, since these materials come at a premium and margins are already so thin in this category. A netbook, like the Nokia Booklet 3G ($600 street, ), surrounds itself in metal, but costs an arm and a leg. The HP Mini 5103 retains its anodized aluminum top, colored in black and brushed slightly for contrast. It's a gorgeous look, sleek enough for trendsetters yet not over-the-top for the small businesses and education sectors. The rest of the netbook field uses variations of plastic, which can be attractive as well.
