HP Mini 210

The HP Mini 210 consumer netbook is a basic netbook that does a decent job of providing what you'd expect from a typical product in this category, without any major surprises. Fortunately, it does so at a reasonable price: Mini 210 configurations start at $279, though the model we tested included a couple of upgrades that raised its price to $309. Like lots of other netbooks, the Mini 210 runs on Intel's Atom N450 CPU and integrated GMA 3150 graphics. You get 1GB of RAM, but no option for more and no easy way to upgrade the RAM yourself. The default configuration includes a 5400-rpm 160GB hard drive, but our review unit came with a 7200-rpm 160GB hard drive (a 250GB drive is available at extra cost). The faster rotation speed of our unit's hard drive undoubtedly helped the Mini 210 in our WorldBench tests: The system scored a respectable 38--in line with the median for Atom-based netbooks--despite its limited amount of RAM. The netbook's battery life, on the other hand, was a bit disappointing: It conked out after about 6.5 hours in our lab tests. Though 6.5 hours isn't a terrible figure, quite a few recent netbooks do better.

HP Mini 210

We've always been more partial to the Netbooks put out by HP's business side (such as the Mini 5102), but budget-conscious buyers can get largely similar systems from HP's consumer side with lower starting prices. The consumer lineup, previously anchored by the Mini 110, has gotten a modest makeover in 2010, morphing into the Mini 210. New to this version are Intel's latest Atom N450 CPU and optional lid colors. Most importantly, the awkward side-anchored mouse buttons have been moved to a more traditional spot below the touch pad, fixing one of the major annoyances of the Mini 110. There's also an option for the Broadcom Crystal HD video accelerator, which allows HD video playback (but is more of a mixed bag for streaming online HD video). With its excellent keyboard and touch pad, the Mini 210 is one of the nicer-looking overall Netbook packages available. The base $299 version includes the same hardware you'd find on competing $299 Netbooks from Dell, Acer, or Asus (so it's largely a matter of personal aesthetic preference), and this $384 configuration includes the HD video accelerator and a higher-definition 1,366x768-pixel display, making it a good deal. The outside of the Mini 210's chassis looks very similar to previous HP Netbooks, such as the Mini 110.

HP Mini 210

If you asked us in the past if we like HP’s netbooks, we’d tell you, “It depends.” We love the business-focused Mini 5102, for example, because of its great keyboard, sturdy design, and over 10 hours of endurance with its 6-cell battery. But the company’s consumer 10-inch netbooks haven’t measured up to the competition from ASUS, Acer, and Toshiba. HP has put its best foot forward with the Mini 210 ($384 as configured), which takes Intel’s Atom N450 processor and wraps it in a sleek new design with an improved keyboard. This configuration also pairs a high-def screen with Broadcom’s Crystal HD Enhanced Media Accelerator for HD playback. However, this netbook doesn’t last as long on a charge as other Pine Trail netbooks. The bottom also runs warm, and its touchpad requires a bit of a learning curve. Should you make this Mini yours? The 10.5 x 6.9 x 1.1-inch Mini 210 resembles the business-centric Mini 5102 more than its consumer-focused predecessor, the Mini 110. And that’s a compliment. The 210 has the same island-style keys as the 5102, but has softer, rounded edges and a chassis reminiscent of the HP Envy line.
