Not long after the Folio 13, HP is launching another ultrabook, the Envy 4, this time for the "big screen" laptop market with a sale price starting at £650. The Envy 4 is a fairly nice object that combines matte and glossy plastics in an agreeable overall design. The look and feel are enhanced by a red soft-touch chassis. One small problem is that the contours of the keyboard, the wrist support and the lid, which are matte, and the contours of the glossy screen, all collect smudges. That means you'll have to do at least some upkeep in order for it to retain its full charm. The chiclet keyboard is well-integrated into the chassis. The keys are the right size, for the most part; both soft and quiet. One of the nice things about HP keyboards is the addition of shortcuts (for volume, screen brightness, keyboard...), which means you don't have to press Fn to use these functions. HP figured that since people use shortcuts more often than they use the Function keys, they would make the Fn key apply instead to F1, F2, etc. Once you get used to it, it's much more practical that way. We still would have preferred the keys to be backlit, as on the Folio 13, which makes it easier to use the computer even in poorly lit settings.
After the recent update, the Samsung Series 5 had become a cracker of an ultrabook, particularly when you consider the price tag. For quite a while now, we have been recommending the Ivy Bridge version of the Samsung ultrabook to anyone who has been asking for what to buy! But, there us a new challenger on the block, and is taking the battle / providing an alternative, whichever way you look at it, to the Samsung. Yes, we are talking about the HP Envy 4-1002TX ultrabook. Ultrabooks, quite simply had just one task to accomplish on the looks front – look sexy. Laptop designs and form factors had gone out of hand quite a long time back, and Intel wanted to retain some good elements, as far as possible, in this new category. The HP Envy 4 does tick most of the check boxes on the design checklist. There is a generous amount of aluminum used on the HP Envy 4, which gives it a \"looks more expensive than it actually is” look. The illuminated logo idea that HP had dabbled with till recently, has now given way to the neat looking logo on one edge of the lid. The lid has a very subtle brushed metal finish, and that carries forward to the areas around the keyboard.
There was a time, last year or so, when an ultrabook represented a distinct product within a computer line. Now, as is the case with Hewlett-Packard, there are whole lines of ultrabooks. Yes, that makes shopping a little more difficult, but the extra choices can theoretically work out to your advantage. Finding the sweet spot, though, has never been tougher. Exhibit A is the HP Envy 4, a 14-inch laptop that's part of a line of Intel processor-bearing ultrabooks and AMD processor-bearing "Sleekbooks." These thin laptops represent a different part of the thin-and-light landscape than the stylish and expensive HP Envy 14 Spectre released earlier this year, or the thinner Spectre XT. This Envy 4 and its brethren are the affordable ultrabooks. AMD versions of the HP Envy lineup cost less (the 15.6-inch Envy Sleekbook 6 is available for as low as $599), while the Intel versions have an accompanying markup. The $679 HP Envy 4-1015DX (this exact model is a retail configuration available from Best Buy) has a last-gen Intel Core i3 processor, a 500GB hard drive, and 4GB of RAM in a body that feels like the Editors' Choice Award-winning HP Folio 13 ultrabook I loved last year and the HP dm4 thin laptop combined together, with little bits of Beats Audio design touches.
What we have here today is the shiny new HP ENVY 4 Ultrabook sporting a 3rd gen Intel Core-i5 dual-core processor and of course those Beats Audio speakers. It packs a lot of power under the hood and all folded up will only be about 0.78? thick, but is this enough to earn your dollars? Head down past the break and we'll find out. This may not be HP's ultra high end, but the ENVY series has always been one of their better offerings. Back in May we got our first glace at this Ultrabook, and then late last month we were able to unbox it and dig in a bit deeper. To get you started off with full specs, details, and the unboxing you'll want to start here. This aluminum wrapped machine hit the shelves last month for about $800 and today we're going to give you a better look, as well as our review and impressions on the laptop. It certainly isn't HP's nicest wrapped device but the aluminum has a great feel. For some reason the tip on top has been replaced with plastic, and the aluminum doesn't extend to the entire edge of the casing. This gives opening and closing it a rather cheap feel, because the plastic is indeed very cheap. Otherwise the entire body is well built, and feels like it too.
The HP Envy 4-1030us joins a suddenly crowded field of Ultrabooks priced around or under $800. All of these machines offer slim designs, more than five hours of battery life, plus an SSD cache paired with a larger hard drive to deliver fast resume and boot times. How does this 14-inch Ultrabook stand out? HP's aluminum alloy design certainly turns heads, and the Envy 4 boasts Beats Audio for adding a little oomph to your music and movies. Is this $799 Ultrabook the best bet for the money? Let's find out.Click to EnlargeFollowing the tradition of HP's Envy family of notebooks, the Envy 4 features a sleek, modern aesthetic. A black matte aluminum alloy covers both the interior and exterior of the entire machine, except for the soft dark red underside. We love the look feel of the red soft-touch, slip-resistant base. In fact, we wish the color and material played a more prominent role in the overall design.Weighing just 3.7 pounds, the Envy 4 is lighter than the Acer Aspire TimelineU M5-481TG-6814, (4.4 pounds), the Dell Inspiron 14z (4.2 pounds), as well as the Toshiba Satellite U845 (3.9 pounds). To be fair, though, the Acer and the Dell both have optical drives.
The world of the ultrabook is becoming increasingly varied, with every laptop manufacturer offering its own take on what a good super-portable machine should be like. HP's Envy 4 Ultrabook is an affordable, slim and stylish machine that hopefully won't wipe out all your savings. But to keep the price low, HP has sacrificed processing power. My review model came with an Intel Core i3 processor from last year's range of Sandy Bridge chips, rather than the newer Ivy Bridge variety. The Envy 4 is available now to buy. With an atttractive price tag of only £650, is it worth the cut corners? While there are some razor-thin ultrabooks on the market that threaten to slice atoms clean in half, none of them are made by HP. Its Envy 14 Spectre ultrabook measures 20mm thick, which is rather more portly than super-sleek models like the Asus Zenbook UX31 or Apple's MacBook Air. At 20mm thick, there are slimmer laptops out there, but it's still highly portable and will slip easily into your satchel. You won't struggle to slide it into a thin sleeve though, and with a width of 340mm and a depth of 236mm, it's easily carried in your backpack.
HP's Envy 4 Ultrabook may be one of the most affordable Envy notebooks ever built, but it still flaunts solid build quality and attractive finish. In 2006 HP purchased a small but storied computer boutique known as Voodoo. The acquisition was meant to enhance HP's high-performance desktops and laptops, both of which were lagging behind the competition. Both companies put a lot of effort into integrating Voodoo's approach with HP's corporate know-how. The result was Envy, a sub-brand of HP that began with the Voodoo Envy 133.HP has always kept Envy a premium brand. Occasional sales and coupons could dip Envy pricing below $1,000, but all models have started above that price — until now.The two new, affordable models are the Envy 4 and Envy 6. The Envy 4 is the 14-inch model while the Envy 6 packs a 15.6-inch display. The least expensive of these, the Envy 6z, has an AMD Fusion APU. However, the slightly more expensive Envy 4t comes with a standard second-generation Core i5 low-voltage processor and a price tag of $700. Equipped with an SSD, HP calls the Envy 4 an Ultrabook, but with a standard mechanical drive Intel's rigid naming conventions for Ultrabooks force HP to resort to the Sleekbook name instead.
Ultrabooks, for the most part, look the same: skinny, sleek, and an awful lot like Apple's MacBook line. But the HP Envy 4 is different. It appears to be bigger and thicker than other 14-inch Ultrabooks (it's not), but it has a design that's, thankfully, all its own. This attractive ultraportable features a flat, plateau-like brushed aluminum cover and a sexy red undercarriage. Plus, it's a solid performer with excellent speakers. Our review model, which costs $870 (list; as of 7/24/2012), has a third-generation Intel i5-3317U processor, 4GB of RAM, and two hard drives: a 500GB HDD and a 32GB SSD (the latter is used as a cache for the hard drive to ensure a quick boot-up time and faster application loading). The Envy 4 starts up in 19 seconds, which is pretty quick for the category, though not quite as fast as the Acer Aspire S5 (12.3 seconds) or the Dell XPS 13 (16.9 seconds). The Envy 4 also features built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0, and runs a 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium. The Envy 4 does not have a discrete graphics card, and relies on Intel's integrated HD graphics chip for its graphics performance.
