HP has staked its claim to making some of the best media center desktop replacement laptops on the market today with the Envy line of premium laptops. While there are other 3D-enabled laptops available, like the Lenovo IdeaPad Y560D ($1,399, 3 Stars) and ASUS G51J-1B 3D ($1,700, 3.5 Stars), the HP Envy 17-1190N (3D) ($1,599.99 direct) puts a 3D display in a premium quality package. The HP Envy 17 3D (17-1190N) sports attractive design that lives up to its name. The thin aluminum body mimics the clean lines of the Apple MacBook Pro 17-inch ($2,799 direct, 4 stars), but HP has added a champagne color tint called "Carbon Relic" and a subtle swirling texture laser-etched across the lid and palm rest. The full sized chiclet-style keyboard is nice, and benefits from the integrated numeric pad. The keys have a firm response and smooth motion. Even better, the keyboard comes standard with backlight that vastly improves keyboard usability in dark environments. Though the multitouch clickpad used by HP has proven in the past to be problematic, it looks to me as though HP has done the work to polish out some of the rough spots.

I took a close look at HP's Envy 17 last September and found a lot to like, plus a few issues that bugged me. So it goes with most products--there's no perfect laptop. Now HP's refreshing the Envy 17, adding a new display and stereoscopic 3D capability. In fact, the unit HP shipped to PC World had only one minor difference, other than the display, from the earlier version. The new Envy 17 with 3D had a single 500GB hard drive rather than a pair of 320GB drives. The CPU, RAM, Blu-ray drive, and GPU were all the same. So I'm not going to dwell on features like USB ports, processor, or networking--those are all pretty much the same. The carryover AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5850 GPU, though, is a key component in enabling stereoscopic 3D; it may also be a weak link, as we'll see. One thing that did drop a bit was the performance score on PC WorldBench 6. That's because the battery life of the Envy 17 3D seems significantly shorter--1 hour, 27 minutes, versus 2:19 on the original. That could be because the display's 120Hz refresh rate, needed for stereoscopic 3D, sucks more juice. A single hard drive, instead of two drives in a RAID array, can also impact WorldBench scores, as some of its benchmarks scale well with storage performance.
HP Envy 17 3D review
HP has updated its Envy 17 laptop to include ATi's latest 3D technology, a direct competitor to Nvidia's 3D Vision, and the result is a desirable media machine that is perfect for keeping the family fully entertained. ATi has used the same stereoscopic system as Nvidia's 3D Vision, with glasses that use active shutters to produce the 3D image. There's no external dongle to clutter your USB ports, as the 3D technology is built into the chassis. ATi's technology is currently not as widely supported as Nvidia's, with just over a dozen games currently compatible, including major titles such as Modern Warfare 2 and World of Warcraft. We suffered no discomfort wearing the glasses for extended periods, although they're not flattering. However, we were highly impressed watching 3D video as the picture is a lot brighter than with Nvidia's technology, as well as pleasingly crisp. Credit for the great picture goes to the 17.3-inch widescreen display which, along with the Acer Aspire Ethos 8943G, features a Full HD resolution. The Envy's speakers feature HP's Beats technology and they also impress. The Intel Core i5 580M processor may not be quite as powerful as the Acer Aspire Ethos 8943G and Samsung RF710-S03UK's Core i7 CPUs, but is still capable of multi-tasking with resource-heavy software.
HP ENVY 17 3D Review
Welcome to a review of the biggest fattest HP 3D desktop replacement notebook you'll ever come across. Not that it's the biggest that'll ever be made, but when you've got this thing sitting on your desk, you'll wonder how you ever got along without such an abundance of screen real-estate on what the world, up until recently, was calling a laptop computer. This is the HP ENVY 17 3D, and not only does it have full 3D capabilities and a width bigger than your humble narrator's torso, it's got a screen so bright it makes the real world seem yellow. This gigantic HP ENVY 17 3D review unit is a fabulously large at 16.38\"(W) x 10.83\" (D) x1.25\" (min height) / 1.52\" (max height). It weighs in at 7.37 lbs - more than you'll want to be carrying around in your packpack, if you know what I'm talking about (unless of course you'd like to bring it to a LAN and impress your comrades of course, then weight is never an issue.) I wouldn't expect a 17.3\" notebook to be any less heavy than this, but hey, we're in an age where a MacBook Air can be so small and thing that it gets thrown away with the mail on accident, so what do I know?
