HP Envy 15
The HP Envy 15 (2012) ($1,249.99 direct) is the latest iteration of HP's premium line of desktop replacement laptops, offering a mix of style, substance, and price that's well suited to both work and play. Though it competes with current top dogs, like our Editors' Choice Samsung Series 7 (NP700Z5A-S03) ($1,299 list, 4 stars), and bears a strong resemblance to the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Late 2011) ($1,799 direct, 4 stars), a number of additional features, such as deep integration of Beats Audio and an impressive number of wireless options, help set the Envy 15 apart from the pack. From its bare aluminum chassis to its large touchpad and black chiclet-style keyboard, the Envy 15 unabashedly copies everything that works well for Apple on the MacBook Pro. HP has added a few touches of its own, such as beveling the edges to increase comfort and utilizing a black lid (on our model; it's also available in gray) with a glowing HP logo in one corner. The Envy is also just a shade heavier (5.7 pounds versus 5.5 pounds for the MacBook Pro). The black chiclet-style keyboard is highlighted with a subtle yet striking red strip that runs around its recessed inside edge.

Last year’s Envy laptops were a bit of a disappointment. The design that wowed me in 2010 had grown stale by 2011; at that point, the rest of the world had caught up to and surpassed the Envy’s design, while HP was content to update only the system’s internal components. The new Envy 15 and 17, which HP released right at the end of 2011, finally feature a whole new design. For the most part, it’s great, but a few nagging issues keep the system from being an easy recommendation. First, know that the new Envy laptops come in 15.6-inch and 17-inch sizes, with the 14-inch version transitioning to the new Spectre Ultrabook. Our review concerns the 15.6-inch Envy 15, which is pretty big as all-purpose laptops go. It’s 15 inches wide, 9.6 inches deep, and 1.2 inches thick. With a weight of 5.8 pounds, it’s not a back-breaker, but it certainly doesn’t qualify as “lightweight.” The silver-toned aluminum inside deck and edges are reminiscent of a MacBook Pro, but Apple’s 15-inch laptop is smaller in every dimension and just a tad lighter. Our $1250 review configuration (price as of January 25, 2012) is the base model with a single upgrade (more on that later).
HP Envy 15
One of the few consistent high-end Windows laptop lines, HP's Envy series has always impressed with its sharp design, high-end components, and (aside from the too-expensive very first models) reasonable prices. With this new revision, the Envy has finally gotten its first serious makeover since the original. Inside our 15-inch test unit was a standard set of components, weighted toward multimedia and midlevel gaming: an Intel Core i5 2430M CPU, 6GB of RAM, a 500GB HDD, and an AMD Radeon 7690M GPU. The series starts at $1,099 for essentially the same configuration, but this unit had its 15.6-inch display upgraded to 1,920x1,080 pixels, a $150 add-on. Intel Core i7 CPUs, SSD storage, and more RAM are all available, but drive up the price considerably. Even with some upgrades, that's a lot less than a comparable 15-inch MacBook Pro. And, the inclusion of a physical volume control wheel is truly inspired, giving the Envy 15 an edge over the other big-brand premium 15-inch, Dell's XPS 15z, which is thinner, and starts at only $999, but lacks the big click pad and Beats Audio features of the Envy 15. The biggest downside is HP's just-announced Envy Spectre 14-inch from CES.
HP Envy 15 (2012) Review
The HP Envy 15 manages to outgun Apple’s 15-inch MacBook Pro in just about every category, and still come in cheaper. For those who’ve missed out on the last few years of the Envy line, this is HP’s stab at the high-end consumer laptop market. Apple dominates in this market, often stripping away attention from perfectly good (or even great) high-end laptops running Windows — including older Envy laptops. A new model provides opportunities to include new features, but internally the HP Envy 15 hasn’t changed much. Our review unit, which is a base model with a display upgrade, has a Core i5 2430M processor paired with 6GB of RAM and a Radeon HD 7690M discrete GPU. For this, you’ll have to pay $1099 - just $20 more than the Envy 14, which was $1079. Certainly, this appears competitive at first glance, but the real news here is the external redesign. Keeping up with the gold standard (Apple) is an uphill struggle. Let’s see if HP has brought the right tools From a distance, you’d have trouble telling the difference between the new HP Envy 15 and older models in the line. All of the design elements are the same.
HP Envy 15
Six years after the introduction of the MacBook Pro, it appears the PC industry has finally realized that Apple was onto something. With laptops like the Dell XPS 15z and Samsung Series 7 Chronos, the incumbents are scrambling to build a cheaper MacBook Pro for the Windows set, and in more ways than one: not only do the Windows machines have similar metallic builds, they also attempt to copy Apple's design language. HP was one of the first to attempt to capitalize on the Apple formula with the original Envy 15 in 2009, but shied away from an outright clone with a curvier riff on the aluminum case. As you can see above, the company's not so shy anymore — the new Envy 15 looks almost exactly like a MacBook Pro when open. If HP's going to throw down with Apple on its own carefully polished aluminum turf, we're going to judge it accordingly: is the new Envy 15 as much of a Windows MacBook Pro as its looks suggest? Or is HP just banking on Apple's image to sell a lesser product? Read on to find out. Lift the Envy 15's smooth black lid and you'll be greeted by a most familiar sight: HP's computer has a nearly identical silhouette to Apple's famous design.
HP ENVY 15 Review
All the headlines these days seem to be grabbed by those svelte little Ultrabooks, but there's still a considerable market for big-screen, high-power laptops out there. HP is more than happy to serve, and their latest offerings in the top of the line ENVY family makes a compelling showing, combining media features and a premium fit and finish at a lower price than its competitors. Unlike the only technically portable ENVY 17 3D, the 15-inch size is ideal for a desktop replacement that's still decent on portability. How does the ENVY 15 stack up? Let's find out. The ENVY 15 shares a lot of design DNA with the rest of the line, and that means lots of metal and secondary utility as a blunt weapon. The typical high-class build quality is present in full force, with a new black-on-grey color scheme that's accented with some red Beats trim. It would be almost impossible to forget the inspirations from Apple's Macbook Pro line that defined the early ENVY models, but the latest seems to be finding a bit of its own identity. A depressed keyboard section and an analog audio dial inset into the body make for some unique and functional touches.
