HP EliteBook 8740w Review

The HP EliteBook 8740w has been on the market for a while now, but it is still the largest and most powerful workstation in HP's current lineup of business notebooks. This massive workhorse features Intel processors, your choice of Nvidia or ATI workstation graphics and is available with HP's exclusive 17-inch "DreamColor" display. It's been a long time coming, but we finally took a closer look at this desktop replacement to see if it really is a graphic artist's best friend.BUY the HP EliteBook 8740wNewegg.com $2,818.99BuyAAE $2,905.03ANT Online $2,750.31see all pricing for the HP EliteBook 8740wOur review unit of the EliteBook 8740w features the following configuration: Build and DesignThe HP EliteBook 8740w is a "mobile workstation" designed to meet very specific requirements for performance, durability, power consumption and a host of other features. In each case the EliteBook line meets or exceeds those standards, so before you even try to life this almost eight-pound notebook you know it's built to be tough. The main body of the laptop is covered in the "HP DuraCase" and "HP DuraFinish" which is essentially a hard plastic and strong magnesium alloy inner shell much like its predecessor strengthened by a brushed aluminum outer shell that is scratch resistant.

HP EliteBook 8740w

Fields that rely upon strong processors, accurate color displays, and precise visual rendering, have often turned to WorkStation desktop PCs, which pack powerful processors and top-of-the-line graphics. The HP EliteBook 8740w Mobile Workstation ($1,999 direct) packs these same-grade components into a well-built laptop. Business machines are often sedate in their design, with little attention paid to aesthetics. In contrast, the HP EliteBook 8740w features a design HP has dubbed "business rugged," which offers a blend of style and durability. The chassis and hinges are a light, but sturdy, magnesium alloy. The gunmetal gray chassis sports a scratch-resistant finish. The rugged design is more than skin deep, as the EliteBook 8740w has been built to meet military toughness standards. Whether it be dust, temperature, humidity, vibration, or altitude, the EliteBook 8740w is built to survive it and keep performing. Internally, the 320GB 7,200rpm hard drive is cushioned with shock-dampening material and wrapped in a magnesium drive cage with hardened steel pins holding everything together. A three-axis accelerometer detects motion and activates additional hard drive protection against drops and shocks.

HP EliteBook 8740w Review

It’s difficult to pick just one standout feature of the HP EliteBook 8740w mobile workstation. Certainly a bright, 17-inch, 10-bit LCD panel that’s capable of displaying more than 1 billion colors and remains visible at up to about a 170-degree offset without any color degradation is worth noting. But so is the notebook’s durable design, with its spill-resistant keyboard, magnesium-alloy chassis, and magnesium-aluminum display enclosure. Then there’s also the 8740w’s impressive performance that runs circles around our zero-point configuration. With features squarely aimed at businesses that require a color-accurate display, such as graphic-arts production and medical imaging—as well as less-than-forgiving work environments, such as a factory floor—there is little doubt why the 8740w is considered a mobile workstation. This also goes a long way toward explaining a price tag that starts at $3,000. Powered by a 2GHz Intel Core i7-920XM processor, with 8GB of 1,333MHz DDR3 SDRAM, a 320GB 7,200rpm hard drive, and an Nvidia Quadro 5000M GPU with 2GB of GDDR5 memory, our eval unit cost a hefty $5,290.

HP EliteBook 8740w

The HP EliteBook 8740w is a highly configurable, business-rugged desktop replacement laptop that actually looks pretty cool. You can have it configured with a Core i5 or i7 processor, up to 32GB of 1333MHz DDR3 RAM, over 1TB of hard-drive space (or up to 256GB of solid-state drive space), and HP's "DreamColor" screen. Naturally, such a loaded model will set you back considerably (here's a hint--the DreamColor screen alone will cost about $600), but it's nice to have the options. For those of us who aren't flush with cash, however, the prebuilt EliteBooks still offer a lot of power in an attractive package. The EliteBook 8740w starts at a somewhat hefty $1999. Our review model, about $3000 (as of October 1, 2010), had a 2.4GHz Intel Core i5 520M processor, 2GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive (running at 7200 rpm), and Windows 7 Professional (64-bit). It also featured a 2-megapixel built-in Webcam, an nVidia Quadro FX 3800M graphics card with 1GB of dedicated video memory, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth, and a DVD±RW drive. Slick and sexy, the EliteBook 8740w has a slate-gray, brushed-magnesium-alloy cover and a black plastic chassis.
