It starts with the lid latch. Where other business laptops offer a small, flimsy latch or, worse, make you scrabble with your fingernails at a nonexistent one, the HP EliteBook 8460p ($1,239 direct) has a big, burnished button that unlocks the securely latched lid. It's the first of your daily exposures to the 8460p's solid construction and classy design. We don't say "solid construction" lightly - like other EliteBooks, the 8460p is a business-rugged system, built to withstand military tests for shock, vibration, dust, and heat. It's not as invulnerable as fully rugged systems such as the Panasonic Toughbook CF-31 ($4,843 street, 3.5 stars) or Dell Latitude E6420 XFR ($5,612 direct, 3.5 stars), but it's built to shrug off the scuffs and bumps of travel - along with inadvertent liquid spills, thanks to a spill-resistant keyboard and drain hole in the bottom. Against that, its sturdy construction makes the 8460p a bit bulkier and heavier than other 14-inch laptops such as the Lenovo IdeaPad U400 ($899.99 direct, 4 stars) and Dell XPS 14z ($1,299 direct, 4 stars), and it lacks a couple of up-to-date features such as Intel Wireless Display (WiDi). But it's still a handsome, helpful business companion.
HP EliteBook 8460p Notebook Review
A few months ago we posted our review of the HP ProBook 6360b, the latest addition to HP's "b" series notebooks and their first in a 13.3" form factor. Today we'll be looking at another business-class notebook from HP, the EliteBook 8460p. As its name suggests, this system is a step above the standard business-minded 6360b and as such, it's billed as a Large Enterprise Business product. The "professional" EliteBook retails for about $300 more than the ProBook, but is that premium worthwhile? Our review unit is armed with an Intel Core i5-2520M operating at 2.50GHz (3.2GHz Turbo Boost), 4GB of 1333 MHz DDR3 memory, a 320GB 7200RPM hard drive, Intel Centrino 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, a removable 6-cell (62WHr) Li-Ion battery, a DVD +/-RW SuperMulti DL optical drive with LightScribe and a 14.0" LED-backlit HD anti-glare display with a native resolution of 1366 x 768. Graphics are processed using an AMD Radeon HD 6470M with 1GB of dedicated DDR3 memory. As configured today, our sample machine retails for $1,061.99 at Newegg. The system measures 13.31" x 9.11" x 1.25" (W/D/H) and weighs 4.56lbs, making it slightly thinner than the 6360b but at the same time, nearly half a pound heavier.

HP's new EliteBook line looks much like models in the older EliteBook line, such as the EliteBook 8440w we reviewed 15 months ago. Yes, the external skin offers a more pleasing brushed aluminum aesthetic, but it's still a little clunky looking. You could call it the gray flannel suit of laptop computing. The latest EliteBook 8460p is the smallest model in the EliteBook lineup, with a 14-inch screen and a weight of about 5.5 pounds. The new model is equipped with one of the latest-generation Intel Core CPUs. Our review unit carried a 2.5GHz Core i5 2520M with a maximum turbo boost speed of 3.2GHz. HP's configuration also included 4GB of RAM, Windows 7 Professional 64-bit edition, and a Radeon HD 6470M mobile GPU. The Radeon HD 6470M is fully DirectX 11-compliant, but it's unlikely to give you much of a performance boost in current-generation DX11 games: Its 3DMark 2011 performance score is a modest 598. T play hardcore games, you'll have to dial down the resolution and detail settings substantially. But the EliteBook 8460p is all about business, not play, and HP includes a robust package of software that caters to business users.

Like any good business partner, a laptop used in an office environment needs to meet certain criteria: It must perform well, last a long time, and not give away any of your trade secrets. You also want it to make you look good. The EliteBook 8460p ($1,199 as tested) exceeds all of those requirements. This redesigned notebook sports a rock-solid but elegant aluminum finish and features a silky smooth glass touchpad and improved SRS sound. Just as important, this system combines second-generation Core i5 power and AMD graphics with enough battery life to get you through those marathon meetings. Add in top-notch security tools and you have a notebook that lives up to its name. Is the latest EliteBook the king of business machines?The EliteBook 8460p benefits from HP's revamped DuraCase design. Decked out in a cool platinum color, this business laptop features a bead-blasted aluminum lid (which minimizes smudges and fingerprints) and a brushed aluminum deck. We also appreciate the large button on the front of the notebook for easily unlocking the lid, and subtle touches such as the engraved EliteBook logo to the left of the touchpad. Overall, the 8460p has a sleeker, more modern aesthetic than the latest Dell Latitudes and Lenovo ThinkPads.
