HP EliteBook 8440w Core i7 Notebook Review
Splitting the difference. Satisfying the niche. Exploiting an opportunity. All of those phrases could be used to accurately describe what HP has done here with the new EliteBook 8440w. It's one of the smaller options in the expanding EliteBook family, yet also one of the most powerful. That's not a combination you hear of very often. In most circumstances, you'll need a larger machine in order to accommodate more powerful components within, mostly because the more powerful components emit more heat than the lower-end components. Hewlett-Packard, however, has managed to get a Core i7 Mobile processor within the frame of a 14" notebook and still keep the heat under control. What we're left with is an extremely unique machine that has fewer competitive alternatives. In general, 14" notebooks are harder to find than 13" ultraportables and 15" mainstream options. The 14" machine is still a great size in our eyes for those who want the power of a mainstream machine with added portability. But what's even less common is a 14" mobile workstation, which has workstation-level graphics, a cutting-edge CPU and a rugged enclosure. It's definitely a unique combination, and HP's EliteBook 8440w marries all of those.

Big corporations have the budgets to buy the bleeding-edge, no-compromise business laptops, which is why companies like HP build the best. The HP EliteBook 8440w ($1,650 direct) is a force to be reckoned with in the business world, with parts that include an Intel Core i7 processor (dual core), workstation Nvidia graphics, and speedy hard drives. There isn't an external peripheral or accessory that can't connect to this laptop; it's loaded with current and legacy features. On the other side of the coin, I think the Lenovo ThinkPad T410 ($1,484 direct, ) make better keyboards and navigation tools, although their user experience is a matter of personal taste. EliteBook designs are indicative of modern times, as metals are synonymous with trendsetters like Apple and Asus. The 8440w uses brushed metal on its cover, which is not only sleek and stylish, but it's also tough as nails. And that's because HP subjects its EliteBooks to a slew of modified military tests, including ones for heat, cold, dust, and moisture. The 8440w is certainly a sturdier machine than the Lenovo T410 and Toshiba Tecra R10-S4401 ($1,549 direct, ), and looks better, too. At 5.6 pounds, it's marginally heavier than the 5.5-pound Lenovo T410 - both of which came with huge 9-cell batteries.

The HP EliteBook 8440w won't win awards for ultrathin design elements or elegant looks, but underneath the almost military-style exterior is a quad-core Intel CPU coupled with an nVidia Quadro FX 380M professional-grade graphics processor. When you first unpack the laptop, the muted magnesium-clad system impresses with its solid feel. While the body of the unit is mostly plastic, it's a dense, unyielding plastic that exudes ruggedness without seeming overbuilt. Priced at $1649 (as of February 23, 2010), the 8440w isn't the least expensive all-purpose laptop, but it delivers robust performance in a 5.3-pound package. The 8440w, the latest update to the HP corporate workstation line, builds in capabilities beyond the average 14-inch notebook. The 1600-by-900-pixel, LED-backlit screen is a cut above most 14-inch displays, allowing more visible windows to be on tap when you're working in a multiple-application environment. The 8440w's expansion options are more prosaic, however. You get four USB ports (three on the left, one on the right; the last doubles as an eSATA port), plus a mini-FireWire connector and the requisite audio input and output jacks.

Workstations traditionally conjure up images of large, hulking boxes with lots of power—gaming rigs without the flair, almost. HP’s new EliteBook 8440w changes that perception with a workstation that won’t induce a hernia by carrying it. While not the most powerful of notebooks, the Core i7 processor and discrete graphics in this $1,649 EliteBook put it near the top of the pack in this system’s weight class, and its business-rugged design will help keep your investment (and data) safe and sound. The 8440w continues in the same aesthetic tradition as other EliteBooks: the lid and palm rest are made of anodized aluminum, and the keyboard area is a matte black plastic. Distinguishing the Workstation line from other EliteBooks, the metal on the 8440w and its ilk are a dark gunmetal gray, as opposed to the brighter platinum finish on the EliteBook 8440p. We actually prefer the 8440w’s look; it has an elegant yet slightly menacing feel, which is something you want in a mobile workstation. This thing says, “I mean business.” At 5.4 pounds with its six-cell battery, the 8440w isn’t as portable as the spate of ULV systems appearing these days, but neither is it as heavy or bulky as such mobile monsters as the Lenovo ThinkPad W700, or even the EliteBook 8730w.
