HP EliteBook 2740p

The HP EliteBook 2740p adds a twist to the typical design of ultraportable laptops. As a notebook, this thin, light PC fits big performance into its small case, but that's not all. You can rotate the display to shift it into tablet mode. A pressure-sensitive stylus can do sketches on screen, or you can point with up to two fingers, enabling multitouch gestures. And this EliteBook supplies nearly every other expected feature, making it a versatile work machine for any portable situation. I tested the 2.53GHz Intel Core i5-540M version, equipped with 4GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, and an extra battery mounted underneath. (HP charges $1699 for the laptop and $179 for the additional battery; price as of 8/5/2010.) HP boasts that the machine includes desktop-class chips, and it shows in the performance and battery life; the laptop feels speedy, but battery life is merely adequate. The machine scored a strong 104 in our WorldBench 6 test suite, putting it near the front of the pack in the ultraportable category, and applications all felt responsive during general use. The EliteBook provides ample power for Office software, image editors, and nearly anything a mobile pro could install.

HP EliteBook 2740p

Convertible tablets may not be singing to the same tune as the Apple iPad ($699 direct, ) slate tablet, but they have a big fan base in the sales force, healthcare, and other vertical markets. The HP EliteBook 2740p ($1,880 direct) is a solidly-constructed tablet, even though its basic look hasn't changed in years. Besides having a full-size keyboard, outstanding battery life, and multitouch screen, the 2740p is now one of the most powerful convertible tablets, thanks to a standard voltage Core i5 (or Core i7) processor. Like its predecessors, though, the 12-inch screen falls short in the brightness department. The 2740p's aluminum body has withstood the test of time, and why shouldn't it? It's sleek and built on all the EliteBook principles, highlighted by the scratch-resistant aluminum surface, magnesium alloy base, and a spill-resistant keyboard (now with a draining hole on the underside of the system). Its ruggedized characteristics are similar to those of the Lenovo ThinkPad X200 Tablet (Multitouch) ($2,000 direct, ), as both are subjected to a subset of military torture tests. At 3.9 pounds, the 2740p is the lightest convertible tablet compared with the Lenovo X200 Tablet (4.2 lbs) and Fujitsu LifeBook T5010 ($1,859 direct, ) (5 lbs).

HP EliteBook 2740p

Remember when tablets were called Tablet PCs, and they were geared toward productivity instead of apps and entertainment? Here’s something to jog your memory. The HP EliteBook 2740p ($1,699 as configured) is a powerful convertible targeted at mobile professionals looking for pen and touch input. This 3.8-pound machine features a durable design, a fast Core i5 processor, and lets you get online and check your e-mail and calendar without booting into Windows. The touch functionality feels a little thin out of the box, and we wish the standard battery lasted longer on a charge, but overall the 2740p is a solid business tablet for the money. Tough but light enough to qualify as an ultraportable, the 2740p has an all-aluminum matte silver surface and a full magnesium enclosure. This modern-looking but slightly chunky convertible feels like it can stand up to a fair amount of abuse, whether you’re toting it from your office to the conference room or traveling cross-country. The hinge also feels sturdy, even if it’s not bi-directional like the Lenovo ThinkPad X201. With a 1.3-inch profile, the 2740p has the same thickness as the ThinkPad X201 Tablet but is bulkier than the 1.1-inch thin Dell Latitude XT2.
