HP EliteBook 2560p Review
Review: The ruggedly handsome HP EliteBook 2560p offers durability and great performance, but may still be a tough sell beside cheaper, slimmer competitors.This is HP’s flagship business ultraportable — which means, in the eyes of enthusiasts, it’s one of the most interesting laptops the company makes. A pricetag of over $1,000, however, may put a damper on some buyer’s excitement. For that can of dough, buyers will be expecting a portable workhorse. Our review unit is a base model equipped with a Core i5-2410M processor, 4GB of RAM, and Intel HD 3000 graphics. These specifications are far from outstanding for a laptop starting at $999 on Amazon, but the business laptop market is a different world. The competing Lenovo X220 with a Core i5 is at least $899 on Amazon, which isn’t exactly cheap, either. As always, we’ll do a thorough investigation into the 2560p’s hardware performance, but that isn’t what will make or break this laptop. Instead we’ll need to focus on design, software, and perhaps above all — portability. When it comes to aesthetics, HP’s direction with the ProBook and EliteBook lines has been clear for some time: simple and silver.
HP Elitebook 2560p Review
To call HP’s 2560p an “ultraportable” is pushing it. It has a slightly smaller footprint than the Toshiba R830, with a screen size of 12.5 inches, but it’s heavier by more than a pound. With its power brick, you’re looking at more than five pounds, including a battery that protrudes a full inch from the back of the notebook’s body. This is no dainty package. Of course, it feels like a machine that can take its licks. HP likes to point out that the notebook is designed and tested to meet Mil-Spec standards for drops, temperature shock, and altitude changes, among other stressors. Nestled within the 2560p’s island keyboard is a pointing stick (a la Lenovo’s ThinkPads), which, along with an additional set of right and left mouse buttons below the spacebar, lets you control the cursor without moving your hands from the keys. It’s a nice feature for folks who roll that way, but if you’re partial to using a touchpad, you might resent how the additional mouse buttons encroach on the pad’s surface area. We also found horizontal and vertical scrolling on the touchpad to be erratic. In performance, the 2560p is solid. It features a 2.6GHz Intel Core i5-2540M to the Toshiba’s 2.7GHz Intel Core i7-2620M, and the two trade benchmarks win within fairly close proximity, save Premiere Pro, where the HP was 21 percent faster than the Toshiba.

This business laptop is billed as a travel companion with exceptional build quality, a slim form factor, and a weight of just 3.6 pounds. But can this 12.5-inch durable business notebook perform when you're away from the office? Read our full review to find out more about HP's smallest and lightest EliteBook.Build and DesignThe 12.5-inch 2560p was designed for the traveling business professional in mind as it is the smallest and lightest in the EliteBook family of notebooks and because it's built with HP's DuraCase technology. Meaning, this notebook is supposed to hold up against bangs, scratches, bumps, and falls--and prevent things such as display cracks, broken hinges, and hard drive data loss. The chassis has a hard magnesium alloy as a sturdy support structure and is made to protect the top and bottom of the notebook against the elements. The display is layered in magnesium and then covered in an anodized aluminum sheet. HP points out that this construction is "50 percent stronger than magnesium alone." The palmrests are brushed with an aluminum finish that helps prevent against scratches, and the display's hinges are made of metal alloy with steel pin axels.

The HP EliteBook 2560p business notebook can multitask with the best of them but is light enough for regular travel. The executive-chic design doesn't hurt either, especially since it's built to withstand a fair amount of abuse. Combine that with a serious security suite, long battery life, and a DVD drive--a rarity on systems this size--and you've got a winner.As with the HP EliteBook 8460p, the 2560p sports a platinum-colored DuraCase design. The lid's bead-blasted brushed-aluminum finish with a slightly raised HP logo exudes austere elegance and cuts down on unsightly fingerprints and smudges. The interior deck is also done in brushed aluminum and houses a black matte keyboard. The gray touchpad and mouse buttons add subtle contrast. We especially liked the engraved EliteBook logo located directly below the keyboard and found ourselves continually running our finger over the delicate detail. You'll find a fingerprint reader to the left of the touchpad.The DuraCase isn't just for show. The EliteBook 2560p was designed to meet MIL-STD-810G testing for vibration, dust, altitude, and operating at high temperatures. The notebook is also reinforced by titanium-alloy hinges.

A business ultraportable, one small enough to be tucked under your arm or into a small tote, is invaluable to a road warrior. It's even more desirable when it performs like a desktop replacement. The HP Elitebook 2560p ($1,299.99 direct) is incredibly fast and full-featured for a pint-sized business laptop. It boasts a speedy Core i5 processor and multiple battery options that can yield up to 9 hours on the road. Add to that a modern look, thanks to a new aluminum design, and you can safely say that this business ultraportable is worth looking into. The Elitebook 2560p is redesigned from the ground up, taking a few design cuesfrom the Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch (Thunderbolt) ($1,499 direct, 3.5 stars) in terms of color selection and its aluminum exterior. The clean lines, minimal indicator lights, and silver tone are very similar to that of a MacBook Pro, though the large battery that sticks out from its back seemed like a hurried after-thought. Young professionals will find it more aesthetically appealing than the black-clad Lenovo ThinkPad X220 ($1299 direct, 4 stars). The 2560p is also military-grade sturdy, having undergone vigorous testing based on the MIL-SPEC 810G spec, which entails testing in damp, dusty, shaky, and extremely hot and cold environments.
