Product Survey: Laptops

Halfway between a netbook and a notebook, the Hannspree HannsBook SN12E2 is in the budget ultra-portable category. Performance is a notch above that of the average netbook, particularly thanks to the dual-core low consumption processor. It affords both good battery life and compactness, without neglecting processing speed. Glossy plastics are all over the HannsBook SN12E2. Unfortunately this disserves the product more than it improves its looks. The black coating very quickly gets covered in fingermarks and dust. The screen hood is in dark red and this fortunately camouflages these marks better. The plastics are nice to the touch but are quite supple, which makes you wonder how they'll hold out over time. The screen hinge, on the other hand, though rather ugly, is solid and should last well. The is made up of large flat keys (16 x 16 mm on the upper part of the key and 17x17 at the base). The keyboard takes up the entire width of the machine and keying is quite nice, firm and rapid. Sound and brightness settings are accessed on the function keys (F1 & F11) in combination with the "Fn" key. The disappointed us. It isn't multi-touch and there are no scroll bars.
