1080p Crysis Comparison - Radeon 5770 vs 6850

Comparing the HIS Radeon HD 5770 and PowerColor Radeon HD 6850 graphics cards. The Radeon 6850 showed faster framerates at higher specs, compared to the 5770. No overclocking, no tweaks. Both video cards feature 1GB DDR5 memory. Each require only a single 75W, 6-pin power cable and a minimum recommended 450W power supply. The Crysis GPU timedemo was run for each setting and card. The first loop was ignored, the second was shot for this video, and portions of the third and fourth loops were captured by Fraps. The precise times and framerates shown were those of the second flyby, as shown during the third pass. For the sake of the tests, ALL settings were set to the same value for each spec run, including object quality and motion blur. Of course, settings can be altered to suit taste or improve performance. For example, lowering postprocessing to high (on the very high run) resulted in a 6 fps increase on the Radeon 6850. I am not a professional computer guy. I cannot offer recommendations or advice on your specific hardware. This video shows the results of my video card upgrade only, and your experiences may vary.

Until that launch, NVIDIA chips had the performance crown for the single GPU video card market in terms of performance. One could argue about the necessity of DirectX 11 hardware in 2009 as only one game, Dirt 2 is scheduled to be released that supports it this year in December, but the fact that ATI has launched the ultimate performer WITH DirectX 11 support means that the choice for someone wanting the highest performing video card on the market today really isnt much of a choice at all. XFX started selling ATI cards late last year with the launch of their HD 4890 series. As you might know, XFX has been a long-time seller of NVIDIA based video cards but the market and the economy forced XFX to diversify. Today they sell both NVIDIA and ATI based video cards. ATI launched their HD 5870 at the $379 price point, but that leaves a wide market for video cards under $300. The HD 5850 which is based on the same chip as the HD 5870 but with less SPs and memory bandwidth is less but the performance should be excellent.

While a 10MHz overclock on both the core and memory clock speeds is not much, that is not the point of this card. The Vapor-X video card runs quietly when in Windows with no discernable noise from the card in normal operation. The second thing this card has is a high overclock threshold with 850MHz for the core and 1420MHz for the memory fully stable. Temperatures with Vapor-X reached 56C under load when overclocked and 42C when idle, very good temperatures for a video card. The cost of the card will be a little more expensive than a 5750 reference card but for that cost you get excellent cooling, excellent overclocking and slightly higher performance due to the increased clocks.
