We found the Asus Matrix GTX 580 Platinum that we reviewed in the November 2011 issue to be pretty badass: It’s a solid, factory-overclocked card that’s impressively easy to push even harder. But it’s also three slots wide and requires two 8-pin PCIe power connectors. Gigabyte’s GTX 580 Super Overclock (model GV-N580SO-15L) takes Nvidia’s GPU even further, pumping the core from a stock 772MHz all the way to 855MHz, and the card’s 1.5GB of GDDR5 memory from a stock 1,002MHz to 1,025MHz (the Matrix GTX 580 comes out of the box with its GPU running at 816MHz and its memory at 1,002MHz). And the Gigabyte takes up only two slots and uses just a single 8-pin power connector. Gigabyte, like Asus, provides software to help you overclock the card even more, but Gigabyte’s card lacks the other engineering amenities that Asus provides, including voltage control, insta-max fan speed, and reset-to-factory-settings buttons. This renders Gigabyte’s offering less forgiving when it comes to pushing the envelope. The Super OC ships with three cooling fans, which must be better than the two on the Matrix, right?
Welcome to the second half of our 580 Faceoff. There are many high-performance graphics cards out there, and the NVIDIA GTX 580 is one of the best. Many manufacturers have made their own versions of the GTX 580, so how do we know which card to buy? We've already taken a look at the ASUS Matrix GTX 580 Platinum, so today we'll be looking at the GIGABYTE GTX 580 SOC. Graphics card vendors often try to make their cards stand out in a few areas. Some vendors emphasize a higher factory overclock. Some to stand out by replacing the stock heatsink and cooler with an after-market unit that is supposed to deliver a cooler card and lower overall noise level. Then there are vendors who go the whole nine yards with a non-reference design and high quality components. The ASUS GTX 580 Matrix and the GIGABYTE GTX 580 SOC fall in this last category. In the past, GIGABYTE's SOC label did not always refer to the non-reference design; instead, it is usually awarded by the company's "Gauntlet selection", where components go through strenuous testing in order to earn the SOC branding.
Gigabyte is best known for its blue motherboards, undoubtedly some of the best in the business, however depending on where you live you will have noticed these days they offer a multitude of other products from mobile phones to computer mice. Their graphics card division has emerged as a top contender in recent years, whether you are looking to save up and buy a vanilla reference board-style graphics card or if you are after a custom design that carries an improved cooling solution out of the box. In an effort to appeal to the enthusiast community, Gigabyte launched the SOC (Super Overclock) series. Checking out which GPUs belong to the series we noted few AMD-based graphics cards are part of the line, with a majority of products branded with Nvidia's seal, including several variants of the GeForce GTX 560 Ti SOC, the GTX 570 SOC, and most recently the GTX 580 SOC that we'll be testing today. Factory overclocked graphics cards are nothing new and the GTX 580 GPU has been around for months now (with nothing new scheduled from Nvidia until next year apparently), but Gigabyte claims to have the world's fastest GTX 580.
