Gigabyte X79-UD3 review
Plotting a performance PC? Snag a high end motherboard. That's the conventional wisdom challenged by the new Gigabyte X79-UD3.Of course, any board based on Intel's X79 chipset hardly rates as poverty item. At £175, the Gigabyte X79-UD3 ain't exactly cheap, but it is within a fiver of the cheapest X79 motherboards on the market. Everything, therefore, is relative. Consequently, the Gigabyte X79-UD3 is flagrantly frills-free. But with so many features now finding their way onto the the CPU die itself, including the memory controller and PCI Express bus, you could argue motherboards in general are less critical.So Gigabyte's task is to deliver quality and performance where it matters while not going overboard on the corner cutting compared with more expensive X79 models such as the Asus P9X79 Pro and MSI X79A-GD65 8D. If Gigabyte can pull that off, we can certainly live without trinkets such as hardware power switches and LED displays. These days, we're accustomed to pretty consistent performance across motherboards sharing the same chipset. Gigabyte's X79-UD3 is no exception.
Gigabyte X79-UD3 Intel X79 Motherboard Review
Gigabyte’s lineup of Intel X79 or Sandy Bridge-E motherboards is only made up of four boards. For gamers there is the G1 Assassin 2, X79-UD7-OC for overclockers, and X79-UD5 for enthusiasts. This brings us to the X79-UD3 which is Gigabyte’s entry-level and least expensive Intel X79 motherboard coming it at $249. Sandy Bridge-E is Intel’s high-end platform and the X79 chipset is much improved over its P67/Z68 counterparts. You now have 40 PCI-Express 3.0 lanes and quad-channel memory. That means with this board you can easily throw in up to 32GB of DDR3 and run 4-way Crossfire or SLI right out of the box. Also this is the first time we will see Gigabyte’s 3D BIOS. Read on as we inspect the X79-UD3 Motherboard. The X79-UD3 comes in a nice retail box that I would have to say is more reserved than previous Gigabyte motherboard boxes. The front is not completely littered with information, just the really important stuff. On the back there is an overview of some of the more important features of the board.
