Gigabyte P67A-UD4-B3

Black is the new blue for Gigabyte. As one of its earliest second-generation Core ("Sandy Bridge") motherboards, the P67A-UD4-B3 ($189.99 list), demonstrates, the company is definitely leaving yesteryear's candy colors behind, at least for its more performance-oriented products. Unfortunately, not every aspect of this move to a sleeker motherboard is an improvement, and forward-thinkers will find this motherboard missing some features present in competing (and even less-expensive) models. If you're building an LGA1155-socket system, this reasonably well-appointed board will satisfy most of your needs. But you can do better. As its name suggests, the P67A-UD4-B3 both features Intel's new B3 stepping (to eliminate the glitch detected in earlier boards equipped with Sandy Bridge technology), and uses the P67 Express chipset, which is one of the higher-functioning consumer models of the second-generation Core family. It supports one PCIe x16 slot or two PCIe x8 slots (the Gigabyte board goes for the latter, in addition to three PCIe x1 slots and two old-school PCI slots), with a total of eight PCIe lanes running at 5 GTps; 14 USB 2.0 ports; and a total of six on-board SATA ports (with two running the 6Gbps SATA III, rather than the slower SATA II).

Intel P67 Roundup: ASUS, GIGABYTE, Intel & MSI

Next up is GIGABYTE's P67A-UD4, which I consider to be one of the best-looking boards on the market (second to GIGABYTE's own UD7 model). Those who love black PCBs and clean aesthetics are going to love this board here, as for the most part, things are kept simple, right down to the heatsinks. As someone who appreciates lots of fan headers on a motherboard, this board let me down a bit. Aside from the top CPU fan header, there are just three more; one next to the DIMM slots, another at the bottom, and the last up top, next to the 8-pin power connector. A couple of pages ago, I mentioned that I dislike those 8-pin connectors to be anywhere except at the top, and horizontal, but that's not something accomplished here. However, because the connector is still close to the absolute top, plugging in the connector shouldn't prove to be too much of a problem. While I was forced to use a cable extender with MSI's board, for example, I didn't need to use it for this one. Like ASUS, GIGABYTE puts a fair bit of focus into efficient power delivery, and the company's P67 line-up is no exception.
