Asrock and Asus already offer six A75 motherboards each, but Gigabyte seems content with "just" five. Moreover, these five models are separated by a very small price range. There's a $60 difference between the most and least expensive Asrock A75 motherboards, while $45 separates Asus' boards. Gigabyte's boards are only split by $30. The most expensive models cost just $120 and $123: the A75-UD4H, which we have here today, and the A75-D3H. The A75-UD4H appears to offer the best value. That $3 nets you a superior PCI Express x16 configuration (x16 and x8 bandwidth on the full size slots versus x16 and x4), as well as a DisplayPort output and two additional USB 3.0 ports. Considering Gigabyte's A75-UD4H is $10 cheaper than the Asrock and Asus A75 motherboards, it's expected that some features will be missing. The board's SATA loadout is limited to the AMD A75 FCH's native support (six SATA 6Gb/s ports with RAID 0, 1, 10 and JBOD). However, only five of these ports are onboard as the sixth serves eSATA duty. Conversely, whereas the Asus and Asrock motherboards have six USB 3.0 ports, Gigabyte's entrant offers eight by employing two Etron EJ168A controllers, which power two rear USB 3.0 ports and supply another two for the front panel. It's is the largest USB 3.0 controller around measuring 14x14mm and has been widely used by Gigabyte.
Motherboards supporting AMD's latest Llano technology are arriving thick and fast at the moment: the latest one to pass across this test bench is Gigabyte's A75-UD4H. Although priced for the mainstream market, the GA-A75-UD4H comes with a few bits of hardware normally associated with high-end boards. For example, it uses Gigabyte's Ultra Durable design, which uses 2oz of copper in the PCB. This, together with the Japanese capacitors, makes for a more stable platform, especially when overclocking. This copper-heavy design helps to reduce both board temperatures and electrical noise. Talking of overclocking, there are also dual BIOS chips: always handy should you fry one by taking overclocking too far or if you're unfortunate enough to get hit by a particularly nasty virus. The first thing that strikes you about the A75-UD4H is the appearance of two PCIe x16 slots. This means that not only does the board support dual graphics (hybrid integrated/discrete graphics) but it supports CrossFireX as well. With all the AMD-ness floating around, though, it's not going to be supporting Nvidia's SLI.
We hoped, when we looked at Gigabyte's line of all-black Intel Sandy Bridge motherboards (such as the Gigabyte P67A-UD4-B3), that its new, starker design aesthetic would immediately appear in all the other company's motherboards as well. No such luck! The Gigabyte A75-UDH4 ($129.99 street), an ATX motherboard loaded with the new FM1 socket and intended for use with AMD's A-Series Accelerated Processing Units (APUs), is a return to the color-blinding cornucopia of blue and white that has long distinguished Gigabyte's boards. But if your case doesn't have a windowed side panel, the A75-UDH4 is a fine way to jump on board the Llano train as it chugs down the tracks of revolutionizing integrated graphics on the PC. For the visual capabilities of AMD's latest hardware on its "Lynx" platform (what you get when you combine a Llano motherboard and an A-Series APU) remain the most compelling reason to go in this direction. With support for DirectX 11 (DX11) and delivering beefy frame rates (well, for built-in solutions, anyway), Llano is definitely the way to go if you don't think you'd get quite enough use out of a discrete video card to justify the more significant cash outlay.
