Smokin'! That's exactly what we said upon receiving the benchmark results for Gateway's latest all-in-one desktop, the ZX6951-53.Yes, this system really needs a better name, but that aside, this 23-inch, $999 All-in-One desktop is unique for quite a few reasons. First, and perhaps most noticeable, is the system's curved design--a departure from the standard square build we've seen on just about every all-in-one that has come through our gates. Second, and a bit less noticeable, is the system's speed--simply put, it's fast. But let's not bury the payout any longer: Minus a few details here and there, the ZX6951-53 is one of the best all-in-ones you can buy. Gateway's 1920-by-1080-resolution desktop packs a 3.2GHz Intel Core i3-550 processor within its innards, accompanied by 4 gigabytes of DDR3 memory. The combination helps this all-in-one achieve a score of 121 on our WorldBench 6 series of tests--the fastest performance we've seen in the category (outside of Apple's 27-inch Core i7 and Core i5 iMacs). The next-highest desktop, MSI's AE2420 3D, hits a score of 118 (with a price tag of $1800). The ZX6951-53's cost is quite competitive for 23-inch systems. We were slightly disappointed to see that the hard drive is only 640GB instead of a full terabyte.
Out of the sub-$1,200 all-in-one desktops, the Gateway One ZX6951-53 excels in its performance, features, and touch interface. Like most Gateway desktops, it's jack of all trades and master of none, but you get a lot of value for your money. It doesn't quite unseat our Editors' Choice for all-in-one desktops, but it gets real close, and that's worth a look if you're in the market for an attractive desktop with the power to get things done. The ZX6951-53 has personality in its design: Its curved lower faade rounds out the sharp corners usually found in the all-in-one PCs. The large backlit power button right below the screen is more prominent and easily identifiable than the one found in the previous Gateway all-in-ones like the ZX6900-01e ($1,019.99 list, 3.5 stars). When the system is asleep, the power button flashes like a heartbeat. In between the power button and the screen is an ambient light bar, which illuminates the keyboard or desk in front of you in low-light conditions. There's a touch-sensitive strip on the screen bezel that controls brightness for both the ambient light and the screen itself. The sides are equally minimal: Two USB ports on the right along with audio ports.
