Gateway EC14D07u

How important is an optical drive to your laptop purchase plans? Do you use one for anything other than DVD playback, software installation, and the occasional CD-to-MP3 rip? If you're like us, you don't use an optical drive much at all. Still, we receive an incredible number of e-mails from readers saying that optical drives are part of the equation when buying a laptop. Starting with Netbooks and continuing the trend in "thin-and-light" notebooks, optical drives have been increasingly left out of the smaller end of the laptop spectrum. To those of you who miss them or cry foul that laptops aren't engineered tightly enough to fit those drives in, the Gateway EC14D07u stands as your exception. With a dual-core Pentium processor and otherwise mainstream laptop specs, this 11.6-inch laptop also manages to cram a DVD drive into its relatively thin 1.2-inch-thick frame. How has the magic been done? Well, for one thing, this laptop is really more of a compact fullsize notebook than a Netbook, a modern equivalent of the old 12-inch Apple PowerBook we once loved. Second, the chassis doesn't feel quite as robust as other laptops--in fact, it feels downright cheap.

Gateway EC14D07u

Want the go-anywhere spirit of a netbook and the full keyboard (and features) of a typical laptop? The Gateway EC14D07u ($630 as of March 22, 2010) attempts to merge the two, and in some ways it succeeds: The laptop feels light and yet manages to pack a DVD burner and an 11.6-inch screen. But in other ways--such as with its mediocre audio and video performance--it stumbles. Ultimately, it ranks as an average ultraportable laptop, albeit one that is fast enough for most applications and small enough to tote anywhere. On our WorldBench 6 test suite, the EC14D07u earned a score of 64, strong enough to handle office work, Web browsing, media playback, and most other general tasks you may want to throw at it. The system's 4GB of RAM help it run multiple applications smoothly. (The similarly configured, similarly priced HP Pavilion dv2 eaned a WorldBench 6 score of just 45.) But games and other 3D applications drag in the absence of a dedicate graphics processor. Even 3D titles from a few years back, such as Half-Life 2: Episode 1, are unplayable. The 1.3GHz Intel Pentium SU4100 seems better tuned toward power conservation. In our testing, the battery lasted a solid but unspectacular 6 hours, 20 minutes, and you can extend that time if you dim the screen.

Gateway EC14D07u

In the age of software downloads, web apps, and streaming content, an ultraportable notebook equipped with a DVD drive feels almost quaint. But that’s exactly what makes Gateway’s EC14D07u stand out from other 11.6-inch laptops; it manages to cram an optical drive into its right side while still weighing a fairly light 3.6 pounds. For some, this feature will come in handy, especially those who have a large DVD collection or a Netflix account. For $629, the EC14D07u also features a peppy dual-core Pentium processor and nearly 8 hours of battery life. But should you pay this much when competing sans-optical-drive 11-inchers cost considerably less?Like the Gateway EC1430u we reviewed back in November of 2009, the EC14D07u has a solid build quality and a clean look with a small dash of flair. The system features a glossy NightSky Black lid (which didn’t pick up too many fingerprints) and a textured black finish on the deck with tiny dots. As far as we’re concerned, no gloss on the inside is a good thing. The chrome-like hinges and touchpad buttons serve as nice accents, and the lid has its own silver Gateway brand badge.
