Though the $300 (as of September 27, 2010) eMachines ER1402-05 can't compare in features or performance to pricier desktops, it avoids critical design lapses that might have made it a bad investment at any price. For the brains of its Compact PC, eMachines selected a 1.7GHz AMD Athlon II Neo K125 processor and a category-average 2GB of DDR3 memory. The Neo K125 enables the ER1402-05 hold its own against similarly configured machines that incorporate Intel processors. With a score of 62 on our WorldBench 6 benchmark test suite, the ER1402-05 outperforms many other compact PCs we've reviewed, though the Dell Inspiron Zino HD (which runs on a 1.5GHz Athlon 3250e) gives it a run for its money with a WorldBench score of 59. Meanwhile, the ViewSonic VOT530 PC Mini, the category leader, rode a 2.2GHz CPU to a WorldBench 6 score of 90. Though it lacks special features (including upgradability), the ER1402-05's case is quite pretty to look at. And the included stand permits angled setup for quick access to the system's two front-facing USB ports and multiformat card reader.
The eMachines Mini-e ER1402-05 ($299.99 list) is one of the least expensive desktop PCs on the market. As a standalone nettop, it's defined by its nettop/netbook-class AMD processor. The system comes with a HDMI port, for your HDTV, and a SPDIF port, for your surround sound system. At $300, it has a high bang for the buck ratio, and even though it only has a single-core processor, it can compete with and surpass systems with dual-core Atom processors. For these reasons, the ER1402-05 earns our Editors' Choice award as the standalone nettop to get if you're trying to save money while still getting a full-fledged PC computing experience. The ER1402-05 is a compact nettop, like the Acer AspireRevo R3610-U9022 ($330 list, ). It has a slim form factor with a black and silver color design. The ER1402-05 measures about 8 by 1.5 by 8 inches (HWD) without the included detachable stand; while connected to the stand, it's 11 by 4 by 10 inches (HWD). The extra width is a result of extra space at the base, which keeps the system from tipping over. The system has a green LED embedded in the base - a flashy addition that adds to the ER1402-05's attractive design. eMachines sells an optional bracket, so you can mount the ER1402-05 behind your HDTV or monitor.
