Dell XPS 8300 (X8300-7008NBK)

With a Core i7 processor and AMD Radeon GPU, the Dell XPS 8300 (X8300-7008NBK) ($999.99 list at Best Buy) is equipped to handle all of your home productivity and multimedia task, and enough graphics chops for some casual gaming too. Connectivity ports are plentiful and built-in Wi-Fi in on board, but this system lacks niceties such as USB 3.0 connectivity and a Blu-ray drive. On the outside the X8300-7008NBK is identical to the Dell XPS 8300 (X8300-4004NBK) ($699.99 list, 3.5 stars). Both use the same black mid-tower case sporting a glossy black front panel with silver trim around the edge. The tray at the top of the case is ideal for holding small peripherals, such as cell phones and thumb drives. There are also two USB ports so you can keep your portable devices connected and charged, as well as headphone and microphone jacks. At the top of the front panel are four card reader slots and below them are two optical drive bays and a sliding panel with two USB ports behind it. Unfortunately, none of the USB ports on this machine use high-speed USB 3.0 technology.

Dell XPS 8300 desktop

Dell's XPS 8300 is the first mainstream system we've reviewed to feature Intel's new second-generation (nee Sandy Bridge) Core i7 desktop CPUs. While that doesn't automatically translate to best-of-breed performance, Dell has wrapped a well-balanced, reasonably priced $1,615 configuration around the new chip. We wouldn't recommend this system to dedicated gamers, nor is it the best deal for fast, affordable day-to-day performance. As a media-playing, mainstream-gaming general productivity system, however, the XPS 8300 offers a fair deal for performance-oriented generalists. Just know that for a few dollars more you can get a better-equipped, more cleanly designed desktop elsewhere. To buy this specific configuration, go to Dell's Web site and click on the first column on the XPS 8300 product page. At least, we think. Throughout the course of this review, Dell suggested we click on another column on that page, where we would find this configuration available for about $1,400. For at least a day, that was true. But when we followed up after a weekend had passed, the column Dell recommended pointed us to a new configuration that couldn't be customized to match our review unit.

Dell XPS 8300

That audible sigh you just heard marked the final death throes of a significant chunk of the systems that have been on our Top 10 Performance Desktops chart. And you can thank Intel's Sandy Bridge processor for that. The Dell XPS 8300 is priced at an eye-poppingly low $1399 (as of 2/2/2011). No pre-Sandy Bridge system can top the price-to-performance ratio of this inexpensive little powerhouse. But that's hardly where the story ends. Just how much more can Dell fit into this PC to truly earn the "Performance" title? Spoiler: Lots. The XPS 8300 packs a brand-new 3.4GHz Intel Core i7-2600 CPU within its all-white casing. The chip is but a stone's throw away from being Intel's top-of-the-line part, as its bigger brother -- the i7-2600K -- adds an unlocked CPU multiplier to the equation (overclockers, rejoice). For all intents and purposes, the XPS 8300's processor shares the crown of best on the market right now. Accompanied by eight gigabytes of DDR3-1333 memory, the Sandy Bridge (second-generation Core) CPU helps the XPS 8300 make short work of our WorldBench 6 tests.
