Dell XPS 15z

The new Dell XPS 15z is the company's offering for customers interested in a high-quality, premium 15-inch laptop that looks great, feels elegant and doesn't skimp on features and performance. The Dell XPS 15z has an Intel Core i7 processor, Nvidia graphics, and a full-HD widescreen display. What's more, it almost resembles the Apple MacBook Pro in terms of style and design. But if you think this is a poor man's Apple notebook, you couldn't be more wrong. Read on to see what the Dell XPS 15z has to offer. The 15-inch Dell XPS 15z has a polished metal exterior that feels rich and premium on touch, its screen lid and bottom cover are made of anodized aluminium that resists sratch—also they have a lighter silvery hue like the unibody AppleMacBookPro. But the Dell XPS 15z has a darker deck in comparison, albeit one with a plush palmrest and touchpad. There's little difference in the quality of finish between the Apple and Dell laptops, and both are equally premium and appealing—we especially like the XPS 15z's steel accents running along the edges.

Dell XPS 15z review

Apple's MacBook Pro may well look the part when it gets pulled out in a swanky coffee shop, but it commands a steep price tag. The Dell XPS 15z offers noticeably similar styling and excellent performance for a far more wallet-friendly sum. It's available now from £899. Our review model was at the top of the range and is available for £1,199. If you glanced quickly at the Dell XPS 15z, you'd be forgiven for thinking you had seen a MacBook Pro. The XPS 15z has a very similar aluminium shell that curves smoothly at the edges. Of course, there is a Dell logo on the top of this guy, rather than a picture of half-eaten fruit. The chassis makes the XPS 15z feel very well built and definitely gives it a premium look. At a glance, the Dell XPS 15z could be mistaken for a MacBook Pro Unlike the MacBook Pro, the XPS 15z is not made entirely from aluminium. Inside you'll find grey plastic surrounding the keyboard and trackpad. It's less nice to look at than the metal casing, but it seems solid and doesn't detract from the premium feel. As the XPS 15z is considerably cheaper than the MacBook Pro, we can't expect it to totally match their beautiful unibody construction. The build quality was definitely let down on the bezel around the screen.

Dell XPS 15z

The obvious comparison for Dell's new XPS 15z (the first in a line of z-series XPS systems) isn't another Windows-based PC, it's a 15-inch MacBook Pro. In fact, the overall look and feel of the system are close enough to those of Apple's iconic laptop that you might confuse the two at a glance. The new XPS 15z doesn't quite match the MacBook Pro's level of polish and sophistication, but it costs substantially less. Starting at $999, the XPS 15z incorporates a Core i5-2410M dual-core processor, 6GB of RAM, a GeForce 525M graphics processor with 1GB of graphics RAM, a 500GB 7200-rpm hard drive, and an 8X DVD/CD burner. It supports Nvidia's Optimus technology, which enables the laptop to switch automatically between integrated and discrete graphics as needed to perform well and promote battery life. The left side of the system houses HDMI and mini-DisplayPort outputs, a USB/eSATA combo port, two USB 3.0 ports, and a multicard reader. The USB/eSATA port incorporates Dell's Powershare feature, which allows it to charge mobile devices even when the system is shut down. The right side houses the slot-loading DVD burner along with headphone and microphone jacks.

Dell XPS 15z review

Here at TechRadar, we had some serious geek chills when we reviewed the Dell XPS 15. Combining powerful Intel Core performance with a slick customisable body, beautiful screen and excellent usability, we defy anyone not to enjoy the impressive computing experience it offers. So when Dell came to our office with the shiny new XPS 15z, we immediately had to don the waterproof pants. The stakes have been upped with a surprisingly slender chassis, but Dell hasn't made any sacrifices in terms of performance, thanks to a second generation Sandy Bridge Core i7 CPU ably backed up by 8GB of RAM.Just a quick glance at the gorgeous design and it's obvious that the Dell XPS 15z is a special laptop. A sleek brushed metal design has been used throughout the £899 PC, with a darker tint to the interior. Gone is the jutting lip at the rear. The big booty of the XPS 15 has slimmed right down, while the thickest part of the body measures just 27mm.Fans of the XPS 15 will know that its one downside is its chunky build, so this slender finish makes the Dell XPS 15z a great deal more portable. This is further bolstered by the 2.6kg weight, compared to the XPS 15's 2.8kg frame. The aluminium lid is incredibly thin yet solid, unlike the lids of the Samsung 9 Series laptops.

Dell's XPS 15z Ultra Slim Notebook Review

Every so often, a company does something unexpected; something that sets the bar for its competition and really grabs the attention of potential consumers for one reason or another. Dell is a company that is capable of this and has done so in the past in both their desktop and notebook lines. While Dell has been known for pushing out a huge number of "beige boxes" years back, they're also the company that helped reinvigorate the ultraportable market thanks to the original Adamo, and with the help of Alienware, they're putting together some similarly interesting products lately, in the gaming space as well. For some, Dell may historically have an undeserved reputation for producing run-of-the-mill products, but when you look at their recent smartphone offering like the Venue Pro, slates like the 5-inch Streak and computers like the Adamo XPS, it's hard to not give 'em credit where credit is due. Enter the XPS 15z. For all intents and purposes, this is yet another standout product from Dell, one that simply cannot be lumped into standard mainstream categories. There's something fundamentally different about the 15z that commands a second look, and in our case, an in-depth review of its features and capabilities. First, here's a quick video walk-through we've put together, to give you a taste of what we're getting at here.

Dell XPS 15z

Dell claims its new XPS 15z is the world's thinnest 15-inch laptop, or more precisely that it's the "thinnest 15-inch PC on the planet." The "PC" distinction is important (although to be more accurate we'd have said "Windows laptop"), because at 0.97 inch, it's definitely very thin, but it's still a hair thicker than the 0.95-inch 15-inch MacBook Pro. So, if the XPS 15z is not going to beat the laptop it's most likely to be compared with, the MacBook Pro, in the category it's pitching itself as a ground-breaker in, system thickness, then what's the point? While it may not make for as compelling ad copy, the XPS 15z is better than its gimmicky thickness claims, and is in fact a well-made, reasonably configurable, upscale multimedia and gaming laptop that includes almost all the high-end extras we'd want, from an (optional) 1080p screen, to a backlit keyboard, to 3D support. When you add in the solid metal construction, large speakers, and fair (if not inexpensive) price, which ranges from $999 for a more basic version to $1,534 for our tricked-out Intel Core i7 model, there's a lot to like, and the new XPS 15z is a solid alternative to other premium midsize laptops, such as HP's Envy line, Apple's MacBook Pro, or Dell's own XPS 14.

Dell XPS 15z Review

Dell's original XPS 15 rivaled the 15-inch MacBook Pro in terms of power, price, and (arguably) style, but it couldn't compete when it came to portability. Along comes the XPS 15z, which is now just under an inch thick and weighs a pound less than its predecessor, while still packing an Intel Core i7 processor, Nvidia graphics, and loud speakers. Starting at $999 ($1,534 as configured), the XPS 15z is a fair bit less expensive than the Mac, but it has a full HD display and about six hours of battery life. Has this Dell usurped the MacBook Pro as the best 15-inch notebook on the market? If it weren't for the hinge and the raised Dell logo on the lid, the XPS 15z might be confused for the 15-inch MacBook Pro at a quick glance. Its aluminum lid, magnesium-alloy chassis, and chrome trim around the edges exude more style than the regular XPS line. The deck is a slightly darker metallic color than the lid, and the two speaker grilles on either side of the keyboard have a diagonal pattern that continues on the vents on the bottom and back. Some might find this pattern to be a bit much. The one design feature that seems out of place is the ribbed barrel hinge.

Dell XPS 15z

Adamo was Dell's luxury line until it was phased out a couple of months ago, but keen laptop observers will find a lot of the Adamo's high-end design and premium features in the new Dell XPS 15z ($1,534 direct). The laptop is less than one-inch thick, all aluminum, and comes with a powerful Core i7 CPU. Indeed, the XPS 15z bears a lot of similarities to the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt) ($2,199 direct, 4 stars), one it its prime competitors. Granted, the XPS 15z isn't as powerful as the latest MacBook Pro, but it has a better, 1080p screen, stellar speakers, and more importantly, it costs considerably less. Because of this killer combination of high design and lower price, the 15z earns our Editors' Choice for the desktop replacement laptops. The XPS 15z took some of the finer qualities from the Adamo line and blended them with an XPS. Its looks are more consistent with the Dell XPS 15 (Sandy Bridge) ($1,785 direct, 4 stars), except much thinner. The entire enclosure is made of an aluminum and magnesium alloy; much like theMacBook Pro. There are some fundamental design differences, of course.
