Laptop Reviews: Compare PC and Mac Laptops and Netbooks

Dell has given the XPS 15 all the most recent components, including a Sandy Bridge series processor. This 15.6-inch laptop aims to bring multimedia content to life with a high-end graphics card. Although the XPS is very plasticky, it's nevertheless has a rather sober design. Note however, the finish could be improved as the shell around the keyboard does sink in when you press down on it, even very slightly. This doesn't really alter your usage but we had hoped for better. The keyboard is in the chiclet style, with well proportioned and well positioned keys. Typing is supple and quiet. It's nice to use in spite of the ever present plastic. The multitouch touchpad impressed us very much. The glide is smooth and the touchpad itself big enough to allow you to move the cursor across the screen in one action. Dell has managed to optimise the available space on the palm rest, which is unusual. The webcam (720p) gives a good image when the room is well lit. The darker areas aren't blacked out and movements are well rendered. When the room is dark the webcam struggles a bit but manages to maintain the sort of detail that other models can only aspire to. The connectivity covers all the bases and is distributed along the edges of the laptop.

Dell XPS 15 L502X

For multimedia buffs, the XPS 15 (model L502X) is a generally solid addition to Dell's line of consumer laptops with a little added oomph in performance. Even the basic, most inexpensive model--our review unit costs $799--has discrete Nvidia GeForce 525M graphics with 1GB of memory, a 15.6-inch widescreen LED-backlit display, and JBL-designed speakers, all of which make watching videos and listening to music quite delightful; it also produced better-than-average scores on our gaming tests, compared with other laptops at this cost level. Still, for this price, you won't get really impressive general computing performance. The basic configuration we tested--which includes an Intel Core i5-2410M CPU (a current, lower-end Intel notebook processor) running at 2.3GHz, 4GB of DDR3 memory, the aforementioned Nvidia graphics card (with Optimus support), and the 64-bit edition of Windows 7 Home Premium--scored a mediocre 116 on WorldBench 6. The battery life was an equally unimpressive 4 hours and 10 minutes in our video rundown test. In other words, hard-core number crunchers and people who don't always work near an electrical outlet should consider other options, but these test results also shouldn't overly concern general business users.

Dell XPS 15-L502X (Intel Core i7-2630, 2011)

One of last year's most impressively priced high-end multimedia laptops was the Dell XPS 15. Though it was certainly not svelte, the $849 entry-level model we reviewed had an excellent set of specs and some of the best-sounding speakers we've ever heard on a portable. The new XPS 15 looks a lot like the old one--which isn't that old, really: we reviewed it back in November 2010. Still, there are a few key differences with the 2011 update. First and foremost, all XPS models now have new second-gen Intel Core i-series CPUs. The GPUs have also been revamped, incorporating newer Nvidia GeForce GT 500-series graphics. The keyboard has also been given some tweaking, which we'll go into in more detail. Finally, the built-in Intel Wireless Display is now WiDi 2.0, incorporating HD streaming up to 1080p. The base model of the new XPS 15 is actually even cheaper than last year's, at $799. It comes with a 2.3GHz Core i5-2410M CPU, an Nvidia GeForce GT525 GPU, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB, 7,200rpm hard drive.
