With the XPS 14z, Dell has come to walk on Apple’s flowerbeds, offering a much more affordable option to the Macbook Pro 13-inch. Does this 14-inch model have what it takes to become a runner for Dell? Answers in our review. The Apple unibody look still has the style advantage but the XPS 14z has a magnesium alloy chassis with an impeccable finish. There’s no play and no cracking. The various components fit perfectly together and the 14-inch panel has been fitted into a frame that is hardly any bigger than a standard 13.3-inch. Aesthetically speaking, the keyboard is the least successful component here. On first sight, the keys look overly large, though when actually using it this isn't an issue. Keying is supple, quiet and all the keys are in the right places. The multitouch touchpad is well-proportioned and while not clickable, has all the basic multitouch features (eg. two-finger scrolling). The glide is soft and precise. The webcam720p offers high quality in comparison to numerous competitor models. Its main fault is that the whites are a little dull but the image is detailed, the blacks not blocked out and movements relatively fluid and it’ll be perfectly okay for daily use.
The Dell XPS 14z laptop sports the same design as the Dell XPS 15z, with the difference lying only in its smaller dimensions. The 14-inch Dell XPS 14z laptop, while being solidly built, is a premium home entertainment laptop with stylish design. Sporting the latest Core i7 Sandy Bridge processor, 8 GB of RAM and discrete graphics option ensure that the Dell XPS 14z performs respectably. The design and finish of the Dell XPS 14z laptops bears a stark resemblance to the Apple MacBook Pro - its smooth aluminium outer shell, small arrow keys and keyboard flanking speakers are all reminiscent of the Apple MacBook Pro. Nevertheless, the Dell XPS 14z really feels quite elegant and premium in hand. The spiral metal hinge however is a bit of an eye sore to the otherwise uber elegant design of the Dell XPS 14z. Not just looks, the 14-inch Dell laptop has a pretty study build thanks to its aluminium and magnesium body. The Dell XPS 14z's chiclet styled keyboard is a treat to type on. Keys have just the right amount of feedback you expect and being well spaced just adds to the brisk typing experience. What truly takes the typing experience a step ahead is the added backlight.
Earlier this year, we took a long, hard look at one of Dell's most highly-anticipated multimedia notebooks to date. That was the XPS 15z, and we thought pretty highly of it in almost every measurable way, including its delightfully thin dimensions. Fast forward a few months, and in slides the XPS 14z. According to its branding, this unit is just a single number different than the XPS 15z, and if you didn't know any better, you'd just assume that someone took a shrink-ray to the 15z. Indeed, the 14z really is just a small 15z in some ways, but by the same token, that's something that hasn't really existed outside of HP's Envy 14 and Sony's VAIO SA line. Sub-15" multimedia capable notebooks aren't exactly easy to come by, and most of them make pretty big sacrifices on performance somewhere along the way. The 14z is Dell's "thinnest, fully-featured 14" laptop with an internal optical drive." That's a lot of qualifications, but one thing is clear: it's thin, it's compact, and it packs a punch for the size. LG's Shuriken display is one of the standout features here, enabling a 14" display to be crammed into a 13" form factor. How so? There's barely a bezel.
This all metal notebook puts a 14-inch screen in a 13.3-inch chassis and is packed with the latest technology including a backlit keyboard. We take a closer look at this impressive alternative to the Apple MacBook Pro.Build and DesignThe design and overall quality of the XPS 14z were of paramount importance to the designers. Like the XPS 14z's larger sibling the 15z, the looks are reminiscent of an Apple MacBook Pro. The stark silver exterior is solid aluminum and the darker-colored palm rest is magnesium alloy. The chassis bottom is largely one piece of milled aluminum which lends strength; this notebook feels solid as a rock. The palm rest does not flex even under heavy pressure. I was able to get ripples to show on the screen by pressing in on the back of the lid despite the aluminum backing; this is a probable casualty of the lid being so thin. The hinge holding the lid to the chassis is strong and doesn't allow the lid to wobble excessively. I wish the plastic hinge covering was one piece and not three, however; this is the only part of the notebook that doesn't sync with the rest of the design. The XPS 14z was not designed with user upgradeability in mind; there are no user-accessible panels on the chassis bottom.
Lost in all the hoopla over Intel’s Ultrabook initiative are the more traditional, full-function thin-and-light laptops. The Dell XPS 14z borrows some lines from Apple’s 13-inch MacBook Pro and incorporates a slightly larger display and a better keyboard. On the other hand, the shell appears to be mostly plastic, so it lacks the rigidity of the Apple laptop. The net result represents something close to the state of the art in the all-purpose class of notebook PCs, but it falls a little short of laptop perfection. Our review unit came with an Intel Core i7-2640M clocked at 2.8GHz (up to 3.5GHz in Turbo Boost mode), and a generous 8GB of RAM. Also included was an Nvidia GeForce GT 520M discrete GPU with 1GB of dedicated frame-buffer memory. Dell supports Nvidia’s Optimus technology, which allows the integrated Intel HD Graphics to handle all the mainstream graphics chores, with the GeForce GT 520M kicking in when better 3D chops are necessary. Our test configuration will cost you $1299 (as of November 9, 2011). The entry-level configuration ($999) includes a Core i5-2430, 6GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive, and integrated graphics.
We first checked out Dell's XPS 14z at IFA, a slightly dinkier version of its excellent XPS 15z laptop. The XPS 14z hits stores today and we've already spent a few days snuggling up and getting to know it.While a 14-inch version of a 15-inch laptop might seem a little pointless, we were impressed by how slim and light the XPS 14z turned out. With its 23mm build and 2kg weight, it more closely resembles a 13-inch portable. The XPS 15z wasn't exactly a chubster, but commuters will want to consider this laptop first. The slender body may seem less impressive compared to the upcoming slew of ultrabooks, including the ridiculously skinny Asus Zenbook which is just 9mm thick. However, we had no problem slipping the XPS 14z into our backpack and carrying it around all weekend. In terms of design, almost nothing except the size has been changed from the XPS 15z. You get the same beautiful brushed metal finish, which feels as solid as it looks – we pushed and prodded every inch and found no worrying weak spots. Even the paper-thin aluminium lid is firm enough to take a pounding, so you won't need to pad your bag with bubblewrap.
The Dell XPS 14z follows in the footsteps of its bigger brother, the XPS 15z, by combining sophisticated style with impressive speed. But this premium laptop crams a 14-inch display in a 13-inch metal chasis, making it a better option for professionals on the move. Our $1,299 configuration (it starts at $999) includes a powerful Core i7 processor, 8GB of RAM, and Nvidia switchable graphics, a feature you won't find on the 13-inch MacBook Pro. Read on to find out if the XPS 14z is the ultimate work-and-play laptop.Like its 15-inch cousin, the XPS 14z sports an elegant brushed-metal exterior that looks thoroughly modern. Built from anondized aluminum, the notebook's Elemental Silver chassis is both durable and stylish. A slightly raised diamond-cut Dell insignia is the only accent on the lid. The bottom of the notebook is equally lovely, showcasing elaborate grille work on the vent as well as a small XPS 14z logo. The notebook's interior is also attractive, but the look is busier. A dark-gray magnesium alloy deck sets the stage for a plastic silver keyboard surrounded by two intricate speaker grilles that have the same old-school diaganoal latice work as the bottom vent.
The Dell XPS 14z ($1,299 direct) is a fully-featured mainstream laptop in a compact, metallic chassis. With top-flight features like an Intel Core i7-2640M processor, Nvidia graphics with automatic switching, and one of the best keyboards we've laid hands on, the Dell XPS 14z has the chops to take on the best laptops in its class, but some might balk at the price. The Dell XPS 14z shares much of its design with its desktop replacement predecessor, the Dell XPS 15z (Microsoft) ($999, 4 stars). It has the same streamlined curves, sheathed in aluminum and reinforced with magnesium alloy. The chassis measures 0.9 inches thick, and even with the addition of four chunky shock-absorbing feet the laptop sits less than 1-inch high when closed. Though it sports a 14-inch display, the surrounding bezel is so slim that the dimensions (0.9 by 13.19 by 9.21-inches, HWD) put it closer to a 13-inch laptop. That's roughly the same size as the Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch (Thunderbolt) ($1199 direct, 3.5 stars). The whole package weighs 4.36 pounds, which is lighter than the MacBook and the Dell Inspiron 14z (Core i5) ($750 direct, 4 stars), both of which weigh 4.5 pounds. The Dell XPS 14z has inherited one of the finest keyboards found in current laptops, the same full-sized chiclet keyboard on the Dell XPS 15z.
Dell's XPS line of laptops has survived a few purges of the Dell rolls (Studio, Adamo, and so on) to become the company's flagship premium brand, akin to the Apple MacBook or HP Envy. The latest generation of XPS product, with the "z" designation, kicked off in May 2011, with the 15-inch XPS 15z. Dell claimed that laptop was the world's thinnest 15-inch laptop (Windows laptop, that is), and the new 14-inch XPS 14z makes a similar claim, again with a few asterisks to keep in mind. Dell says that the XPS 14z is the "thinnest fully featured laptop on the planet." What does that mean? According to Dell, it's a laptop with an internal optical drive and discrete graphics. More impressively, this is a 14-inch laptop screen in a body with the smaller footprint of a 13-inch laptop. We like more screen in less body, but it also has one unfortunate side effect. Dell XPS 15z review Lenovo IdeaPad U300s review With so many extremely thin 13-inch laptops hitting the streets right now, such as the first generation of Ultrabooks from Acer, Lenovo, and Asus, the XPS 14z has roughly the same length and width measurements, but looks chunky and thick in comparison.
If the name didn't give you a clue, the Dell XPS 14z laptop is the little brother of the XPS 15z. It knocks an inch off the screen size but still offers decent performance with a sturdy metal case. Our model came loaded with an Intel Core i5 processor and 4GB of RAM. It's available from 15 November for £849 from Dell's online store. If you're particularly style-conscious and don't want to carry round some ugly lump of black plastic, the XPS 14z is worthy of your consideration. It's wrapped in a silver metal shell that's certainly more attractive than many laptops on the market and will look good sat on your desk or on your knee in some posh coffee bar. It's not got the flouncy looks of some Dell machines though, so you could happily slide it out of a bag in a meeting room without running the risk of being passed over for promotion. Again. There's not a whole lot going on on the lid -- just the Dell logo emblazoned on top. It's a rather minimal look that smacks somewhat of the MacBook Pro. That clean, aluminium design is somewhat reminiscent of the MacBook Pro, don't you think? The metal shell means it feels very sturdy.
