"Don't miss the Zero1 Awards in the December 2011 Collector's Edition of Digit. Book your copy now!"The Dell Vostro 3350 is the latest Dell laptop for business users. The Vostro 3350 borrows its elegant design from the Vostro 3300. Apart from this, the business laptop now packs the new Sandy Bridge Core i7 processor, 4 GB of RAM and 500 GB HDD. Those not looking for so much steam can opt for units with mellowed down Core i3s and Core i5s; they are very well priced, too. The Dell Vostro 3350 has similar design to the Vostro 3300, featuring a sturdy and good looking aluminium outer-shell -- everything's almost the same. The Vostro 3350's exterior metal finish gives the business laptop a very sturdy build like the Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E420s. The metal hinges the screen rests on are extremely well built ensuring the screen is firmly rooted to the rest of the chassis. The laptop's surface is matte, and therefore resistant to smudges and dust. The Vostro 3350's 13.3-inch screen has decent viewing angles, more than what we had hoped for. The full-sized chiclet styled, isolated keyboard now features better spaced out keys, making typing much easier; the keys deliver good tactile feedback.
As all-purpose laptops go, the Dell Vostro 3350--the entry-level model in the current version of Dell's small-business line--leans closer than most to the ultraportable side of the fence. Its 13.3-inch, widescreen, LED-backlit display is set into a sleek and attractive 4.9-pound package that, when in use, won't elicit howls of discomfort from the person seated in front of you in economy class, and its excellent battery life should easily get you across the country on said flight. Those factors make the Vostro 3350 a good candidate for travelers on a budget, since precious few true ultraportables are as inexpensive as our test unit ($750 as of July 5, 2011). To reach that price, however, you do have to accept some compromises. Configured with a Core i3-2310 (one of the least powerful current Intel Core processors), 3GB of DDR3 RAM, integrated Intel HD graphics, and the 64-bit edition of Windows 7, our test machine managed a score of only 98 on our WorldBench 6 tests. That's low for an all-purpose laptop, and it falls shy of the scores on our top-ranked ultraportables chart, making the Vostro 3350 less than optimal for tasks involving serious number crunching--large database operations or video editing, for example.
Dell's Vostro 3350 laptop was originally designed to appeal to the firm's business customers, but there's no reason why it won't suit ordinary users after a powerful, solid 13.3'' notebook. The Vostro 3350, or the V3350 for short, is an elegant laptop, and our initial inspection didn't reveal any problems with the build quality. The only worry was the hinge on the screen, which felt a little too flexible and contrasts with the solid impression that the rest of the laptop left us with. The keyboard uses chiclet keys, and they're a decent size and well-spaced, making typing a breeze with errors kept to a minimum. We also liked the multi-touch trackpad because it combines a decent size with accurate tracking over a nice, smooth surface. Even the left- and right-click buttons are good, and feel much more robust than they often do on a laptop. Video captured by the 720p webcam is a little blurry, but other than that it's fine. There's plenty of detail in dark areas of the scene but no overexposure in lighter areas, while colour reproduction is also accurate. All told, it's an excellent webcam. Despite the small 13.3'' form factor, there's a full range of inputs and outputs, with two USB 3.0 ports and a DVD writer on the left-hand side.
Small-business customers need affordable notebooks, but not at the expense of style or performance. Like the previous-generation Vostro, the Dell Vostro 3550 ($682 as configured), has an attractive brushed-aluminum lid, but inside this 15.6-inch system is an Intel Core i3 processor and USB 3.0. You also get an HD webcam and special SRS sound software to enhance those video chats. Read on to find out if the Vostro 3550 is as good a value in practice as it is on paper. The Dell Vostro 3550 sports the same external design as last year's system. The Aberdeen Silver lid (available in Brisbane Bronze and Lucerne Red as well) wears the Dell logo front and center, and is covered mostly in a brushed-aluminum material that wraps around the sides of the notebook and onto the base. A smooth matte-black plastic spans the front and back edges and the entire palm rest. We also like the Vostro's metal hinges, which instead of rotating downward into the deck rise up just a quarter of an inch in front of the back edge of the machine. When the lid is closed, the hinges point upward, almost like a set of flip headlights. The design is subtle, but very stylish.Along with changes to the keyboard, Dell has simplified the Vostro's deck.
Spending a fortune on a Dell Latitude is often times unnecessary for companies that don't need an extensive feature and parts list. That's why Dell has the Vostro line for small businesses. The Dell Vostro 3350 ($741 direct), a 13-inch small business laptop, caters to professionals who prize battery life and mobility above everything else. If they need the extra horsepower, this laptop can accommodate those needs as well. The power of its second-generation Core i5 processor, over nine hours of battery life, and budget-conscious price earn the Vostro 3350 an Editors' Choice in the small business category. The Vostro 3350 slips into a look that the Latitudes have had for the past two years. Its magnesium alloy frame is colored in Aberdeen Silver, with black trimmings in the front and back. If silver is not your cup of tea, red and bronze options are available as well for an additional $30. The hardened metal top makes it as sturdy as the Lenovo ThinkPad E420s and HP ProBook 5310m ($899 direct, 4 stars), though with some minor screen flexing. Its dimensions aren't as thin as the Dell Vostro V130 ($928 direc, 3 stars) and Lenovo ThinkPad X1 ($1,399.99 direct, 3.5 stars), thanks to its built-in optical drive. And it stands a lot taller because of the 80WH battery propping it up from the back.
